Science Discovery provides environmental education programs to thousands of students annually throughout the central coast of California. You can make a positive difference by engaging learners of all ages, helping them to understand, appreciate and explore the natural resources upon which we all depend. You will work with a wide range of learners, from grades K-12. Extensive training and observation opportunities are provided to promote a successful transition into the various programs the Environmental Education Specialist will deliver to schools.
Description:
The Environmental Education Specialist (EES) visits schools throughout San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara Counties to give class programs. A company van is provided for transportation. Topics include Recycling, Vermicomposting, Water Conservation, Stormwater Pollution Prevention, Marine Debris, Household Hazardous Waste, and Wastewater Treatment. The EES also leads field trips to wastewater facilities, lakes, and the Salinas River. Workdays include up to five class programs or a combination of several class programs and one field trip. Other miscellaneous tasks include preparation and maintenance of teaching materials, training sessions, office administration, and staff meetings.
Science Discovery also provides live, virtual education programs through our studio.
Hours / Days
The position starts approximately mid-October, 2024
Monday – Friday with occasional weekend days
Work days begin as early as 7:00 am to as late as 4:30 pm
Qualifications
Coursework in Environmental Studies or closely related field
At least one year of relevant experience, volunteer or paid
Requirements
Ability to present science-based topics to grades K-12
Skills and knowledge to adjust presentations depending on classroom or environmental conditions
Excellent communication skills
Ability to work well with children
Capacity to be a self-starter and work independently as needed
Own reliable transportation with a good driving record
Team-oriented work ethic
Flexible weekly schedule
Lift and carry 30 pounds for a distance of 50 feet
Completion of background check

Applicants should have excellent speaking/teaching skills and the ability to monitor and adjust as the situation requires. Your presentation style is lively and engaging. You can create a meaningful and fun learning environment in any situation. A science background is helpful but not mandatory.
