Job Overview

The GleanSLO Assistant Program Coordinator (GAPC) supports the GleanSLO Program Coordinator (GPC) in the operations, logistics, and coordination of the GleanSLO program. The GAPC assists the GPC in meeting program goals by ensuring that GleanSLO volunteers receive thorough safety and orientation training and guidance, and by cultivating positive relationships with farmers, landowners, and with our partners throughout the community.

Background

The Food Bank Coalition of San Luis Obispo County is a nonprofit, tax exempt organization. We serve our neighbors who are food insecure, often not knowing where their next meal will come from, as well as those at risk of hunger. Each year we supply an average of 4 million pounds of food in San Luis Obispo County through a network of 78 partner agencies “ including food pantries, homeless shelters and afterschool programs. We believe every human being has the right to nutritious food, which is why 50% of the food we distribute is fresh produce.

GleanSLO is a food rescue program of SLO Food Bank that harvests excess produce from farms and backyards. Each year GleanSLO volunteers harvest over 200,000 pounds of local produce that is distributed through SLO Food Banks programs. Together with SLO Food Bank, GleanSLO is able to provide fresh and local produce to our neighbors who are food insecure.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Represent GleanSLO in the community

Identify and register potential produce donors, including backyard and larger scale growers

Lead gleans on a weekly basis

Scout sites on a weekly basis

Work with GleanSLO staff and Steering Committee to find better ways to engage the community

Lead volunteer recruitment, scheduling, and retention strategies

Supervise volunteers by articulating expectations, displaying model behavior, maintaining open lines of

communication and being clear about roles and relationships

Oversee training and logistics for volunteer Backyard Harvest Leaders

Provide safety training and guidance about harvests for all volunteers

Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the GPC

Desired Qualifications

Experience in a non-profit setting

Ability to work independently

Organized

Excellent communication and presentation skills. Comfortable teaching and leading groups

Ability to balance a creative approach with the need to develop and follow a plan

Strong cultural competence. Experience building positive relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders

Recognized as someone who cultivates teamwork as a fundamental organizational practice

Experience in food security and local food system processes

Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Publisher, and the Google Suite

Education and Experience

Bachelors degree or equivalent in job experience and education

Hunger relief, food rescue, and gardening/farming or gleaning experience preferred

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Must possess a valid California Drivers License.

Must have a reliable vehicle, clean driving record, and proof of insurance.

Must be willing to travel throughout San Luis Obispo County.
