Job Description

We're looking to find the perfect Director Engineering candidate for Freckle Education - a part of the Renaissance Learning family of education technology products. Freckle makes sure no students get left behind through its adaptive personalized software practice program. You will report directly to the co-founder / CTO and you will be in charge of all of Freckle's product delivery, maintenance, devops and data engineering.

In this role, you will:

  • Lead Freckle’s Engineering team of 15 people, and growing, managing Freckle's two engineering managers, a Freckle architect and our devops+data engineering team.

  • Be responsible for the delivery and maintenance of all Freckle software to its customers, and for internal tooling used by our teams.

  • Be responsible for Freckle's uptime and SLAs to users, internal and external partners.

  • Be responsible for Freckle data successfully flowing into the hands of its consumers, such as the sales team, product management, business operations and many others.

  • Will sit on the Freckle leadership team, together with the CEO, the CTO, the VP of product, the head of marketing and more. The VP of product will be your main peer in the discovery and delivery of the product to our users.

  • Collaborate with the other Renaissance Learning engineering leaders on a sensible and unified technical strategy across the entire organization.

Within the first month

  • Get to know the rest of the leadership team.

  • Get to know your direct reports and their staff.

  • Get to know the Freckle product.

  • Get to know the Freckle product delivery process.

  • Get to know the rest of the Renaissance Learning engineering leadership team.

Within the first six months

  • Propose and guide revisions to the Freckle product delivery process, including the process around partnering with the Product Management team and making sure our users receive the right solutions to their needs on an efficient time schedule.

  • Represent the needs of Freckle within the rest of Renaissance Learning engineering leadership, and guide Freckle in the process of integrating its technology with the rest of the company as you see fit.

  • Own and manage the engineering team hiring process, maintaining the existing bar and continuing the tradition of technical excellence on the team.

  • Coach your reports and ensure that they and their teams are successful.

  • Oversee the team delivering major critical improvements and expansions to the product.

  • Communicate your teams' progress and status to the company and the relevant stakeholders.

Within the first year

  • Shape the direction of Freckle as a business as part of the Freckle leadership team.

  • Shape the direction of the Renaissance Learning technology roadmap outside of Freckle.

Where will you work?

Anywhere you'd like within the US timezones. The company was majority-remote even prior to the recent pandemic, with the engineering team only having three engineers left in the Bay Area.

Qualifications

In this role, you must have:

  • 7+ years of management experience building engineering teams, and extensive experience with managing managers

  • Experience and success as a coach. Mentorship is one of the most important aspects of this role.

  • Excellent soft skills. You'll be working across the entirety of the Renaissance Learning organization, building relationships and partnerships with other leaders to accomplish large-scale technical goals

  • Razor-sharp verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to attract top talent and build high performing teams
