Job Title: Visitor Services Associate Substitute
Department: Visitor Services, both Museums
Status: Unrepresented, non-exempt, regular, part-time (up to 29 hours) or substitute
Reports to: Agriculture Museum Manager
Hours: Variable hours; weekend availability may be required; substitute positions do not have regular hours.
Position Summary: The Visitor Services Associate (VSA) is responsible for providing high quality customer service to visitors of the Agriculture Museum operated by the Museum of Ventura County, which assists MVC in fulfilling all aspects of our mission.
Working Conditions: Typical reception and museum environments to include: extended periods of working at a desk, including use of a computer, work in a stockroom, and on a retail floor. Some activities take place outside of regular business hours.
Supervises: This position supervises no employees directly; may supervise a limited number of volunteers.
General Responsibilities (including but not limited to):
Represents the Museum of Ventura County to the public, volunteers, and auxiliary groups in a positive and appropriate manner
Performs Admissions desk duties from opening to closing: Registers visitors, collects admission and museum memberships, prepares daily financial reports, monitors museum for security, directs phone inquiries and mail to the appropriate department, provides guests with information about the Museum and its satellite locations, as well as their surrounding areas and attractions
Is in constant communication with Agriculture Museum Manager at Agriculture Museum; Visitor Services Lead at MVC, regarding incidents at the museum, visitor feedback and inquiry, and collections and/or exhibition items
Promotes and sells memberships and program tickets
Assists in the retail store when needed: Receive, tag and display merchandise, handle purchase orders and vendor invoices, organize store and storeroom, perform daily opening and closing procedures including daily deposits and balancing the register, and monitor inventory needs
Protects the Museums cultural property and assets by monitoring the galleries and visitor activities, educate visitors on and enforce the rules and policies of the galleries
Follows Collections Management Policies and Procedures, as well as Visitors Services Policies
Assists multiple departments as needed (the amount of time spent on any department at any given time will fluctuate depending on needs and availability)
Attends staff meetings as assigned
Other duties as assigned
Representative Tasks & Major Responsibilities
Greet visitors and welcome them to the Museum and Museum Store
Collect admission fees and check membership cards, accurately recording admission data
Assist visitors in understanding the layout of the Museum and provide information about events happening throughout the Museum
Be familiar with and able to communicate clearly upcoming events and current exhibits at both museums
Be knowledgeable about Museum Store products and assist visitors with shopping and purchasing Store merchandise
Interact with all guests, students, teachers and field trip chaperones in a friendly and professional manner

Demonstrated ability to learn and work with word processing and other software programs
Position requires strong customer service and interpersonal skills
Ability to communicate with others, including strong verbal skills
Experience working in front of the public and cash handling experience
Ability to multitask and remain flexible to accommodate MVC needs
Ability to use independent judgment to resolve situations as they arise
Ability to work independently and as part of a larger team
Valid CA Drivers License and reliable transportation with proof of liability insurance
Physical Demands: The duties of this job include sitting, standing, bent over, kneeling, and lifting or moving objects up to 20lbs.; climbing stairs, and walking over varied terrain, repeated adjustments to varied lighting conditions, some museum spaces are not climate controlled and vary daily in temperature; some exposure to outdoor elements is necessary at some sites
Preferred (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attitudes):
Experience in a nonprofit or museum setting
Social media knowledge and experience
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
High school diploma and/or some college preferred
