I.PROGRAM/POSITION IDENTIFICATION

Location: Visalia, CA

Work Hours: Monday - Friday

FLSA Status: Hourly, Non-Exempt

The Cooperative Agricultural Support Services (CASS) is a Joint Powers Authority that assists in protecting and supporting California's agricultural industry and the consumers of its products by providing services and staff who fairly, impartially, and dependably carry out their work.

Under the direction of Cooperative Agricultural Support Services and the technical Training Citrus Research Board, the Trap Reader I provide program support by carrying out detailed, careful visual magnified inspection for pest detection, and a variety of daily administrative and clerical tasks.

Under the general supervision of the CASS Lead Trap Reader and/or designated CDFA Environmental Scientist or other management team member, the Trap Reader will perform the functions listed below.

II. ESSENTIAL AND NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Under the direction of a designated supervisor, as well as operating within established guidelines and procedures, responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to the following:

A. Essential Functions:

Trap Reading and Screening – 90%

Using a special desk magnifier, visually read/scan PDEP sticky traps in line grid format, carefully scanning line-by-line for any and all Asian Citrus Psyllid specimen.

Notify Lead Trap Reader or other CDFA management personnel immediately if ACP is detected.

Performs basic data entry into Pest Damage Record computer software to log data on findings on each separate trap inspected.

May repeat visual inspections to validate the findings of other Trap Readers work product.

Clerical – 2%

Responsible for checking mail and immediate disbursement to CASS or CDFA personnel.

Provides back-up phone support for ACP Office Clerks

Dispatching/transferring phone calls to appropriate personnel.

Legibly writing messages on message pad or typing on computer to save and provide to the recipient as accurately and quickly as possible.

Accurate recording and input of daily hours for payroll processing.

May participate in group training/orientations as provided by CASS or CDFA.

May occasionally operate personal or work vehicle to the local post office or other offices on an as needed basis.

Provides professional customer service to members of the public entering ACP office with questions.

Equipment Maintenance, Work and Break Area Maintenance – 4%

Clean work equipment and magnifier daily and carefully to ensure proper use.

Report any equipment problems or defects immediately to Lead Trap Reader or CDFA management on site.

Responsible for keeping personal work area very clean always

Responsible on a rotating basis to take the trash out.

Cleaning of shared breakroom to maintain a professional office environment.

Warehouse Maintenance – 4%

Keep warehouse organized with supplies of traps, or other office supplies.

Prepare traps for shipping to other site and project locations.

Sorts and organizes Citrus Grove Traps, Residential Traps and Delimitation Traps.

Counts/recounts traps for standard number of traps per box.

Anticipates supply needs to ensure materials are always stocked .

B. Nonessential Functions - None

III. WORK ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent works in an open office-like area with standard sized desks for the Trap Readers. Computers are present in all lab spaces for data entry and instrument operation. Equipment with desks and office chairs, as well as magnifying equipment.

IV. INDIVIDUAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position must have the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the position. The incumbent in this position must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships, work well under pressure, work independently, and work cooperatively with other staff members in completing assigned work and meeting required deadlines. Strong verbal and written communication skills are necessary.

V. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The incumbent in this position will be required, with or without reasonable accommodation, to effectively utilize protective gear (gloves) before handling sticky traps to observe with magnifier. The incumbent in this position must be able to handle work interruptions while focusing on trap reading effectively and efficiently. The incumbent in this position must be able to multitask and effectively enter accurate data from each trap read by entering data into the specified software program utilized by CDFA into the computer/database. If interrupted, incumbent must be able to retrace the data and enter it correctly.

The incumbent in this position must be able to independently and effectively operate a desktop or laptop computer using a keyboard and mouse; operate various types of laboratory scientific equipment, handle sticky traps with extreme care, handle ACP sticky traps and other insect traps; employ repetitive arm and wrist motions; frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, twist, reach; and, occasionally lift equipment and related supplies weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
