The Position and the College: As a member of the Colorado Community College System, the Community College of Aurora is dedicated to serving our surrounding community. As a designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), CCA is currently the choice of school for nearly 11,400 students representing over 60 countries, the majority of whom are racially minoritized students (1.8% of CCA’s students are American Indian/Alaskan Native, 8.7% are Asian/Pacific Islander, 20.2% are Black/African American, 30.9% are Latinx, and 32% are White). CCA’s service area includes more than 680,000 residents in Arapahoe, Adams, and Denver counties, and its student population reflects the broad diversity of this area. The college offers more than 90 degrees and certificate programs for students seeking to enhance their current skill set, pursue employment, or transfer to a four-year college or university upon graduation.

CCA serves its diverse student population through innovations in instruction and student support founded on principles of equity and inclusivity. Our Arts & Communication Department is continually working to refine its pedagogy, practice, and assessment to improve outcomes for all students, particularly those with marginalized or minoritized identities. We are a department that values collaboration and experimentation, and we are looking for a colleague who shares these values.

Position Summary: The successful candidate for this position will be responsible for teaching courses relevant to the music industry, including artistry development, production, publishing and marketing, and musical skills development. In addition, this person will work collaboratively with the department chair and their instructional team to develop a vision and growth plan for the newly-created Music and Entertainment Entrepreneurship Program. Responsibilities of this position will also include: actively engaging students; participating in the development and updating of curricula; contributing to instructional planning and assessment; pursuing continued professional development in subject matter and instructional methods; and supporting student activities. CCA is an institution that encourages faculty to be involved in service to the college, including service that contributes to institutional decision-making. Thus, this faculty member will also work collaboratively with colleagues across the college by participating in student outreach, committee assignments, and other academic and institutional support activities. Ultimately, the successful candidate will be a creative educator who values diversity, is committed to Inclusive Excellence, and works well in a collaborative environment.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Teach assigned courses in multiple skill areas of the Music program (theory, performance, business, production, and others)
  • Develop, revise, and/or pilot innovative curricula and course materials
  • Co-create a vision and growth plan for the Music and Entertainment Entrepreneurship (MEE) program
  • Engage the surrounding community by designing and participating in outreach events for the MEE program
  • Serve as a collaborative member of the Arts & Communication Department
  • Support the work of CCA’s highly-skilled and highly-valued adjunct faculty
  • Contribute to the processes of instructional planning and assessment
  • Pursue professional development in subject matter and instructional methods
  • Provide leadership and participate in college service activities
  • Other duties as assigned

Essential qualifications:

  • Evidence of student-centered and student-empowering teaching practices covering various areas of music such as performance, production, theory, and private instruction
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate inclusive pedagogy, adult learning theory, and culturally responsive teaching and learning practices related to the diverse experiences of students, course curriculum and content
  • Demonstrated experience using diverse perspectives from historically marginalized populations to inform curriculum and lesson planning
  • Experience navigating classroom dynamics when issues of equity arise with ability to recognize historical contributions to inequities from the academic discipline.
  • Evidence of using reflexive practices to improve teaching
  • Demonstrated understanding of multiple genres of music from classical to contemporary styles such as pop and jazz
  • Experience using varied digital audio workstation (DAWS) platforms, including Pro-Tools
  • Professional musical performance experience
  • Entrepreneurship experience in music business
  • Master’s degree in music

Anticipated Start Date: August 17, 2020

Salary Range: Anticipated salary range is 44,227-$63,238. The specific salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information. CCA offers an excellent benefit plan. Leave and holiday benefits are also included.
