Within NCEI, the Center for Coasts, Oceans, and Geophysics Science Division (COGS) is globally recognized as the premier repository and provider of geophysical, oceanographic, coastal, space weather and marine ecosystem data and information. NCEI is also home to the International Hydrographic Organization Data Center for Digital Bathymetry (IHO DCDB).CIRES is looking for a scientist with experience managing large data sets, automating processing of data, describing data with standard metadata, and maintaining relational database systems. The successful candidate will participate as part of a greater team stewarding geophysical data, providing discovery and access for sonar data and supplying customer service to global data users. Data management at NCEI is focused on standards-based commercial data management tools, including spatially-enabled relational database management systems that drive web services. This position will support scientists throughout NOAA, academia, and other national and international data contributors by stewarding multibeam sonar data, developing improved ways to discover and access these data and striving to increase collaboration and coordination for data acquisition, management, and sharing.This position is located at NCEI, David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, Colorado, and supports the CIRES Research Theme of Advance Modeling and Observing Systems. NCEI maintains the National Ocean Service (NOS) hydrographic data and product archive (https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/products/nos-hydrographic-survey) , as well as the Hydrographic Survey Metadata Database (HSMDB). Data and products acquired by the Office of Coast Survey provide coverage of U.S. coastal waters and the exclusive economic zone.What Your Key Responsibilities Will BeManage multibeam sonar bathymetry data (50%)

Serve as the contact for governments, researchers, industry and others in the public looking to archive and/or discover and access multibeam data.

Steward multibeam sonar bathymetry and associated support data collected by NOAA, the academic fleet (UNOLS), federal and state agencies, industry and others throughout the national and international community. This involves guiding data providers through the submission process, ingesting datasets for long-term archive, maintaining accurate ISO metadata documentation and other data records within the databases and archive, resolving discrepancies or issues that may arise during ingest, and ensuring public data discovery, access and customer service to a global audience of data users.

Serve as subject matter expert and point of contact for the multibeam repository in the context of large-scale technological advancements NCEI is currently undertaking.

Work with data providers and the community to (25%):

Ensure archive and access needs are met.

Stay abreast of best practices and technological advances that may need to be accommodated.

Interface between the bathymetric community and NCEI/CIRES software developers to determine best practices, formats, submission, discovery, and delivery capabilities.

Work closely with software developers to (20%):

Provide domain driven specifications.

Test functionality after software releases.

Provide feedback on application functionality needs and priorities.

Serve as CIRES supervisor and mentor to junior CIRES employee(s) and student workers (5%)What You Should Know

Applicants must be currently authorized to legally work in the United States on a full-time basis. Please note that those applicants requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future will not be considered for this position.

Given project deliverables, the targeted start date for this position is October 1, 2024.

This position will be rostered in CIRES at the University of Colorado Boulder, but will be physically situated in the David Skaggs Research Center, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO 80305.

If you are the selected finalist you will be required to pass a federal laboratory background clearance for site access.

CIRES offers a generous and comprehensive compensation package.

The annual hiring salary range for this position is $57,942 - $123,459. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and determined based on our CIRES internal career track classification.

Relocation funds are available for this position following CIRES and the University of Colorados relocation processes and procedures.

This position can accommodate a hybrid work modality.

Bachelors or Masters degree in the Earth sciences, oceanography, or related field.

Experience collecting and/or processing multibeam bathymetric sonar data.

What You Will Need

Ability to use query language in SQL.

Proficiency with Linux/Unix.

Excellent organizational and project management skills.

Strong networking skills to work with national and international data providers.
