The Department of Music & Entertainment Industries Studies (MEIS) in the College of Arts & Media has an opening for a full-time one-year Visiting Assistant Professor (unclassified) position. Teaching assignments will have a start date of August 2020 and will require a 40% teaching, 40% scholarship and 20% service loads. This position will end no later than May 31, 2021.

College of Arts & Media

As the first college in Colorado devoted exclusively to arts and entertainment, the College of Arts & Media understands the influence of modern trends on traditional art forms. We combine the latest technology with traditional methods, and we encourage our students to incorporate their discoveries of art's emerging dimensions with our comprehensive instruction on its classical forms. The college has three distinct departments, Music & Entertainment Industries Studies (MEIS), Film & Television FITV) and Visual Arts (VA). The MEIS Department primarily focuses on commercial music styles. Students are given the option to choose from four distinct emphasis areas of study: Performance, Singer/ Songwriter, Music Business, and Recording Arts. The Department of FITV offers students the opportunity to become knowledgeable about working in both Theatre and Film while delving into their special area of interest. The Department of VA offers degree emphasis areas in Visual Arts include Art History, Digital Animation, Digital Design, Illustration, Photography, Studio Arts, and Transmedia-Sculpture.


Department/Program Summary:

The Music and Entertainment Industry Studies (MEIS) Department is one of the only music departments in the country with a contemporary focus and the only music industry program in the Rocky Mountain Region focused on modern, commercial music, located in the heart of Denver’s thriving music scene. With over 500 music students, MEIS is the largest music department in the region. Our programs include industry-connected faculty, small class size, a record label, state-of-the-art facilities, five recording studios, and student internship opportunities. Our alumni are hired by major music industry organizations, have become successful performers and are faculty in major institutions.


Examples of Work Performed:

Teaching (40%)

  • Teach a 3/2 course load in the following areas: introduction to music publishing, music licensing, music supervision, and additional music business courses as required by the Department.

  • Professors are responsible for the preparation of course syllabi, lectures, presentations, and student assignments; evaluation of student work; tracking and progress of student attendance and engagement; management of course in online platform Canvas; etc.

  • All other duties and projects as requested


Scholarship (40%)

  • Conduct research and scholarship in the music publishing and licensing areas

  • Produce professional development through scholarly activity


Service (20%)

  • Serve on department and college committees as per required

Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree (in music or a field related to music business).

  • Experience teaching/instructing music business content and/or music business related academic courses in an institution of higher education or an industry setting.

  • Successful experience in the music industry.

  • Demonstrated skills in music licensing and publishing.


Conditions of Employment:

  • Must be willing and able to successfully pass a national criminal and sex offender background check


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate or PhD degree.

  • Three-Five years successful experience teaching at a higher education institution with experience in the music business and licensing/publishing areas.

  • Extensive experience in the performance/composition area(s), with a national /international reputation.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective teaching with a diverse group of students and working relationships with an accomplished faculty and skilled professional staff.

  • Capacity to develop educational activities at cultural institutions in an urban environment.

  • Demonstrated ability to uphold student confidentiality.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a high level of tact and diplomacy.

  • Knowledge of music publishing, licensing and music supervision.

  • Ability to develop courses that meet programmatic, department, and college goals.

  • Support learning through student engagement by creating a positive classroom atmosphere that encourages active and collaborative learning.

  • Demonstrated knowledge in developing and monitoring student learning outcomes and student assessment strategies.
