Transportation Services at CU Boulder encourages applications for an Equipment Mechanic III! This position is responsible for preventative maintenance, maintenance repairs, and inspections on University heavy-duty vehicles and buses, including an emphasis on refuse trucks and Battery Electric Buses. This includes conducting detailed inspections and removing, repairing, overhauling, and replacing components and parts as necessary, while using the proper tools and equipment.

Transportation Services provides comprehensive transit, fleet management, and maintenance to serve the faculty, staff, students, and visitors at the University of Colorado Boulder. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be:
Diagnostics and Malfunction Maintenance
Inspect, diagnose, and repair mechanical issues on all University vehicles using the necessary tools and diagnostic equipment including various diagnostic computer programs.
Perform repairs to the vehicle manufacturers’ specifications, including engines, transmissions, clutches, drive-lines, differentials, steering and suspensions, fuel and ignition systems, exhaust systems (including regeneration systems), intake systems, electrical systems, brake systems, HVAC systems, hydraulic lift-gates, and other mechanical and electrical systems.
Possess knowledge of the techniques and procedures related to the repair and maintenance of gasoline, diesel and electric vehicles including buses, trailers, refuse and box trucks, and occasional light-duty vehicles.
Possess skill in recognizing and reporting faulty and abnormally functioning components, on diesel, gasoline, and electric-powered equipment, including hydraulic systems.
Possess in-depth knowledge of safety hazards and necessary safety precautions to establish a safe work environment.
Address all Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports in a timely and efficient manner.
Document all work performed on shop work orders using AssetWorks fleet management software.
Complete electrical repairs and welding projects as needed.
Uses various proprietary diagnostic software to diagnose, examine, and investigate light duty and heavy duty electric vehicles to determine causes of defective operation of electrical components, starters, pumps, air suspension systems, pneumatic systems, passenger lift assemblies, battery coolant systems, air conditioning systems, and other EV components.
Lead repair on all battery electric buses, including removing, repairing, and replacing parts and components as necessary. This includes batteries, electrical points, electrical conduits and wiring, and electric motor drive trains.
Follow strict safety procedures for EV vehicles.
Assist in trouble shooting and coordination with ChargePoint, the system used to charge electric buses.
Preventative Maintenance
Perform required inspections and preventative maintenance on University vehicles per manufacturer recommendations to prevent breakdowns on the road, reduce vehicle downtime, and improve fleet reliability.
Perform required annual Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on Commercial Motor Vehicles.
Conduct detailed inspections of EVs per existing maintenance schedules. Ensure all EVs – heavy duty and light duty – meet or exceed minimum preventative maintenance requirements. (e.g. State of Good Repair, Safety, and DOT inspections).
Actively and continuously improve professional knowledge, skills, and abilities by participating in training sessions and educational seminars.
Assist in providing limited training and direction to other technicians.

The anticipated work schedule for this in-person role is Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm.

The salary range is $65,000 - $75,000 annually.

What We Require:
Four (4) years of professional, relevant experience with current proficiency at the journey level OR a combination of related education, formalized apprenticeship program, and/or relevant experience equal to four (4) years.
Must have a valid driver’s license.
Must obtain and maintain a CDL Class A or B within 6 months of hire. Internal CU support/training is available.
