Region 2 encompasses 14 counties in south-central Colorado. The Design and Construction Units provide design, oversight of design, management of NEPA documentation, consultant management, construction management and project management. The Traffic Unit develops policy for plans and construction; analyzes and implements traffic engineering, traffic operations and permit related functions; provides program support and design, manages traffic engineering and safety constructions projects and administers the access management program.Engineers in Training (EITs) apply practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles and techniques. Projects are assigned through a combination of formal instruction and on-the-job training. Duties are performed under the guidance and supervision of a licensed Professional Engineer. The EIT I or II in Design and Construction provides entry level engineering design and construction support for the Unit and develops practical applications of professional engineering processes, theories, laws, principles, and techniques related to highway engineering.The EIT I or II in Traffic learns or assists with engineering design for traffic control through work zones, signalized intersections, and permanent installations on state highways within Region 2 and provides technical support to as needed to the Region Permits Unit Manager and associated staff.Engineers in Training I's or II's in Design and Construction and in Traffic perform the following under guidance and supervision of a Professional Engineer:

Learn/assist with the preparation and design of engineering plans, specifications for new construction or reconstruction of roadways, signals or pavement markings.

Train to or assist with the generation and maintenance of an accurate and detailed estimate for the construction costs of assigned projects.

Ensure quality and consistency of project design and construction plans and procedures by applying good engineering judgment and a wide variety of design and construction manuals, spreadsheets, forms, design aids, computer software, and Department procedures.

Assist the project manager with contract and project administration, which may include monitoring consultant's management of transportation projects; monitoring and preparing schedules; tracking project expenditures; resolving problems and creating task orders; reviewing submittals, materials, workmanship, or finished product to ensure compliance with contract documents equal opportunity laws, safety regulations and state, local and federal ordinances.

Trains to or performs computations of material pay item quantities and calculations utilizing the latest Design Software; trains or assists with measuring and documenting completed item quantities

Assist with/manage financial resources on assigned projects, including reviewing and approving payment to consultants.

Maintain official project records by documenting work done and methods used construction activities, receiving, reviewing, and assuring the proper logging, distribution, and filing of all related documents.

Attend scoping, FIR, and FOR meetings.

Attend review meetings to ensure that plans comply with engineering and regulatory guidelines and identifies engineering and project objectives, anticipated complex features, problems, and possible solutions.

Communicate and correspond with federal, state, local agencies, consultants, contractors, utilities, and public regarding changes or information which has an impact upon them.

Train to or assist with performing detailed inspections.

Trains to or assists with requesting field survey, environmental study, traffic data, right-of-way information, hydrology/hydrology design, structural design, utility locations/relocations, and other information as required.

Design and Construction positions:

Represent the Department during design/construction project oversight processes by reviewing of materials test results and conducting materials testing.

Traffic positions:

Train to or assist with performing highway capacity analyses for traffic volumes in order to determine geometric requirements for design of intersections and/or other safety type improvements.

Train to or assist with development of traffic related specifications and plans sheets including but not limited to round-about geometry, traffic control, signing, pavement, signal, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and detour routes.

Trains to or assists with the development of Intelligent Traffic System, Safety, and Operations Assessment reports and inclusion of these reports into projects.

Train to or assist in preparing project bid packages.

Assist in signal timing and pedestrian/bicycle safety.

Work Environment:

Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday

The Traffic position will spend approximately 30% spent in the field, 70­­­% spent in the office

The Design and Construction positions will spend approximately 10 % in the field and 90 % in the office.

Travel required during work hours throughout the fourteen counties in Region 2

Travel required outside of Region 2 for training and professional development; including occasional overnight stays

Required to drive CDOT vehicles

Substitutions:Registration as a Professional Engineer issued or by the Colorado Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors may be substituted for the Engineer Intern enrollment.It is a CDOT condition of employment that individuals hired to the class of Engineer-In-Training must obtain registration as a Professional Engineer by the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors within eight years of appointment to the position.NOTE: A legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S. equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service.
