Job Description

The City of Merritt has an opportunity for a Labourer to join our Recreation and Facilities team on a casual basis.

Casual employees are scheduled on an as-needed basis to relieve employees on leaves, vacation, or during peak work periods for overload situations;there are no regularly scheduled hours or guarantee of hours.

This is an exciting opportunity to begin your municipal career! As a Labourer, you would carry out various tasks to maintain buildings, facilities and other City of Merritt assets such as the Arena, Civic Centre, the Aquatic Center and City Parks.

You would perform handy-person and repair work such as painting and drywall repairs, ceiling tile replacements, window and gutter cleaning, moss removal and more. You would assist in maintaining the aquatic center by performing standard tests on water and ensuring the safe handling and storage of pool chemicals. You would consult with and collaborate with the team and facilitate a safe and welcoming environment by providing exceptional customer service to the public and other internal and external customers.

Duties may also include but are not limited to conducting inspections for maintenance and safety, cleaning and sanitizing buildings and facilities, providing support for special events such as setting up and taking down tables and chairs, locking up buildings, setting up and troubleshooting audio-visual equipment.

Assigned work may be physically demanding and take place in all weather conditions in a safety-sensitive environment. Labourers take pride in their work and comply with safety standards and safe work procedures, follow policies and protocols and ensure the confidentiality of information. As a Labourer, you may also be tasked with lifting and carrying heavy objects (50 lbs+) such as furniture, emptying and transporting garbage, recycling and compost.

Qualifications

  • A Building Service Worker Certificate.
  • Pool Operations 1 and/ or 2 certificates or willingness to obtain certifications.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s license and satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and amicably in a team environment with a safety-first attitude.
  • Working knowledge and training in safe work practices applicable to the work.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Knowledge and skill in methods, tools and equipment, techniques and materials used in general construction, landscaping and maintenance work.
  • Ability to exercise independent action and complete tasks efficiently, report back on outcomes and communicate any unexpected issues and resolutions.
  • Effective interpersonal communication when dealing with others, including the public.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of this position.

For new hires and those working in designated positions of trust, including those working directly with vulnerable persons, employment is conditional on a satisfactory police information check.

This position is open to applicants who have their primary residence located within 50kms, by road, of the Merritt City Hall building to be regularly and reliably available on an ongoing basis for casual work.

Additional Information

The rate for this position is $27.65 per hour (2020 rates) and it is in the union bargaining unit.Casual employees are scheduled on an as-needed basis to relieve employees on leaves, vacation, or during peak work periods for overload situations;there are no regularly scheduled or guaranteed hours.
