Need hard working farm apprentice (Purcellville)

Vacancy expired!

Located in Loudoun County, Virginia's burgeoning winery and brewery scene, Lydia's Fields farm cultivates a variety of scrumptious heirloom tomatoes, hakurei turnips, arugula, lettuce, herbs, kale, peppers, other vegetables, and figs using sustainable practices on 10 acres of land.

Lydia's Fields is seeking one or two Farm Apprentices to help sow seeds, transplant, weed, prep beds and fields, harvest, wash, pack, and market a wide range of vegetables and multiple varieties of figs at Washington D.C. farmers markets, a new May-September CSA program, and restaurants.

You also will gradually take on more responsibilities as you grow into the position. As of today, July 4, applicants must stay at least the remainder of the 2020 growing season, which runs from the first week of April through early November (35-40 hours/week). A commitment for the entire growing season is preferred. Compensation includes $10/hour AND comfortable accommodations in a new, spacious, and gorgeous barn apartment (includes Internet, dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer) FREE of charge (i.e., no rent). The free housing accommodations are equivalent to about $1,500 rent in expensive Loudoun County.

A high school degree is required; however, a college degree or attending college is preferred. Previous farm/gardening experience is not required, but having these skills is a plus. If you are curious, hardworking, detail-oriented, observant (i.e., notice how things might a have changed from one day to the next), tolerant, friendly, able to take and follow directions (but also point out problems), a self-starter (don't need a lot of hand-holding) and dedicated, email a cover letter, resume and at least one reference to Robert Schubert (Farm Owner) and Amy Page (Farm Manager).

Working at Lydia's Fields provides the opportunity to learn about neighboring flower, vegetable, fruit, and livestock farms.

We strongly prefer (not require) some experience in farming and gardening. You must demonstrate a strong work ethic and able to do more than the immediate task at hand. For example, if you're instructed to execute a task, but you see a tool that could be picked up on your way back to the barn, then take it upon yourself to do so.

We provide comfortable accommodations in a new, spacious, and gorgeous barn apartment (includes Internet, dishwasher and clothes washer and dryer) FREE of charge (i.e., no rent).
