Sleepaway Camp Counselor
Writopia Lab, an award-winning 501(C)(3) nonprofit that runs the country's best creative writing workshops for kids and teens, is looking for creative, passionate, and hard-working counselors to assist at WriCampia, our 12-day Sleepaway camp in late August 2022. WriCampia is a creative writing-oriented sleepaway camp for kids ages 10 to 18. Our young writers produce a range of works including stories, poems, plays, graphic novels, songs, and more.
Location: WriCampia 2022 will be held at Independent Lake Camp in Thompson, Pennsylvania (see map). Transportation between New York City or Washington, DC and camp will be provided by Writopia Lab.
Dates: Sunday, August 21st through Thursday, September 1st. There will be an additional 12 hours of training held via Zoom in early August.
Pay: Stipend of $575, plus 12 hours of training at $15 per hour.
What Does a Counselor Do?
WriCampia counselors are teaching assistants who serve as role models to our young writers while cultivating their confidence in — and love for — writing.
While in our writing workshops, counselors provide typing, editorial, and moral support to our writers.
Counselors sleep in a bunk and eat meals with their campers and provide support and guidance throughout camp.
Counselors support and lead elective activities, which range from filmmaking, zine making, and spoken word, to roleplaying games, playwriting, novel writing, and more!

People who are passionate about creative writing and working with young writers.
People who are hungry to work in a hands-on, collaborative, and fun environment.
People who are excited by the idea of joining a community of writers and fostering literacy and joy in children and teens through creative writing!
Who Will You Work With?
You will be working on a team of 60 counselors, and you will be supported by our experienced Division Heads and Camp Directors.
What Is WriCampia’s COVID-19 Plan?
In August of 2021 we ran WriCampia with 183 campers, 71 staff members, and the support and program staff at ILC — with zero cases of COVID-19. We did that through vaccination, testing, and detailed safety discussions. While the circumstances on the ground will no doubt be different come August of 2022, we are confident in our ability to maintain this track record. We will communicate with all staff (and camper families) in a timely manner to keep everyone apprised and informed of any updates regarding WriCampia, including COVID-19 precautions and plans.
