Performs assigned pre-autopsy “set up” which may include general equipment maintenance, inventory control and stocking of morgue supplies, maintenance of instruments and tools or other pre-analytical activities.
Performs evisceration by methods approved by the pathologist and proper labeling of tissue and organ containers and cassettes as specified by pathologist and/or PA.
Performs post-autopsy activities including preparation of body for transport and disinfection of instruments and morgue.
Performs various support activities to facilitate operation of work area, which may include bringing to the attention of supervisor any broken or non-functioning items or needed supplies.
Participates in, and has knowledge of, laboratory and hospital Performance Improvement activities, including evaluation of new equipment and/or procedures or methods.
QualificationsWhat You Will Need:Required:
Technical skills related to autopsy including set-up, evisceration and clean-up.
Ability to learn and apply computer related applications and programs, including using electronic keyboards and other peripheral devices.
Ability to handle infectious biological specimens, caustics, toxic chemicals and/or irritants appropriately and safely.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology.
Preferred:
Experience in performing autopsies.
High School Diploma or GED
Job Summary:The Laboratory Autopsy Specialist (Diener) performs various laboratory support procedures in the morgue and anatomical pathology areas. Duties include being available to assist the Pathologist and Pathologists’ Assistant (PA) with an autopsy including set-up, evisceration, clean-up and maintenance of morgue and autopsy materials. Work customarily involves practical knowledge in autopsy procedures and support functions. Actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.
