SummaryThe advanced Medical Support Assistant (Advanced) assigned to Orlando VA Healthcare System, to include it's Outpatient and Community Based Outpatient Clinics, are responsible for performing a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants, and other members of the medical facility who provide patient care.ResponsibilitiesThe advanced level of the occupation, the MSA at this grade level will work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model. Typically, the incumbent of the position is assigned to work in one or more of the following settings: Oncology, HIV, SCI, Military Sexual Trauma, or other areas in the facility where MSA services are required. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Performs data entry, updates and verifies demographic information, no-show information. Schedules appointments and collects insurance information. Initiates and carries out a variety of administrative duties in support of patient care. Responsible for checking patients in upon arrival. Coordinates with team members to assure that patients are seen at their scheduled time within the clinic setting. Processes new enrollees and transfer patients by using Register Once, when needed. Contacts the travel office to arrange necessary transportation following established guidelines. Experience and Education: (1) Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office, customer service, or other administrative work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; OR(2) Education: One year above high school; OR (3) Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. GS-6 MSA (Advanced Level) (a) Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level. Candidates must demonstrate all of the KSAs below:

Ability to collaborate, communicate with a wide range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines to accomplish team goal setting to ensure medical care to patients is met.

Ability to independently set priorities and organize work to meet deadlines, ensuring compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations.

Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively , by phone, in person, and in writing. This may include preparing reports in various formats and presenting data to various organizational levels.

Advanced knowledge of the technical health care process, including, but not limited to: scheduling across interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community models and patient health care portals as it related to access to care.

Advanced knowledge of policies and procedures associated with interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery and/or care in the community operational activities that affect patient flow, and patient support care to include, but not limited to appointment cycles, outside patient referrals, follow-up care, overbooking, provider availability, ect.

6.Advanced knowledge of medical terminology due to the technical nature of language utilized by clinicians. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The Medical Support Assistant work is mostly sedentary; however, some walking; standing, and carrying light items are required. Light filing, sometimes involving working close to the floor, is involved. Wrist and back protection can be provided to minimize the risks associated with prolonged use of automated data processing equipment. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
