Job Description:

The Registered Nurse demonstrates critical thinking skills, scientificjudgment, and leadership in the anticipation and planning for the care of the surgical patient. The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for the planning, directing, and provision of nursing care to patients (adult to geriatrics) in accordance with recognized nursing techniques, procedures, established standards, and administrative policies.As a Registered Nurse (RN) in the Operating Room (OR), some of your primary task and responsibilities will be to:

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to volume, census, and acuity
  • Follow through with assignments and informs supervisor if unable to complete tasks
  • Demonstrate responsibility and accountability in the performance and documentation of assessment, reassessment, individualization, and prioritization of the patient's Plan of Care in accordance with the department standards
  • Prioritize and delegate patient care activities based on accurate patient assessment and staff capabilities.
  • Utilize restraint with appropriate justification and documentation with regards to patient safety
  • Evaluate patient's response to the Plan of Care, communicates to members of the health care team, and implements necessary changes to care based on patient assessment
  • Demonstrate capability in assisting with emergency measures (code blue, etc.) until the physician arrives.
  • Promote teamwork, work with multidisciplinary groups, and facilitate problem-solving tasks, using critical thinking techniques
  • Report and document concerns/issues to Supervisor and Risk Management as indicated
  • Demonstrate understanding and compliance with Advanced Directives, End of Life Issues, Hospice, and Post Mortem care
  • Ensure that all patients are welcomed and greeted upon arrival to the unit as per the individual department plan
  • Ensure that all patients transferred and discharged have paperwork completed including medication reconciliation, patient teachingDelays in this process are communicated to the patient and/or family
  • Round hourly (or more frequently as needed) to reassess the patient's condition and document vital signs accordingly
  • Demonstrate awareness or opportunities for performance improvement in unit activities and assists with the development of action plans
  • Provide a safe environment for the surgical patient: · Monitors environmental hazards · Monitor and control the environment: traffic patterns, temp and humidity · Report improper functioning equipment and follows through on repairs · Properly places safety strap, ESU · Perform an instrument, sponge, and needle counts as per policy & procedure. · Actively participates in site/procedure verification process · Identify and labels all medication
  • Properly handles specimens: · Properly documents specimens on Record and Pathology slip · Properly labels specimens · Uses appropriate lab slips for all specimens · Properly prepares specimen – type/size of the container
  • Properly prepares specimen – type/size of container Care of Instruments/equipment: · Handles delicate instruments carefully · Reports dull, malfunctioning instruments · Able to problem-solve, troubleshoot, and take corrective action in care of handling instruments · Returns all equipment and supplies to the proper location
  • Be aware of specific physician preferences: · Maintain and updates surgeons’ cards · When picking cases, assures all routine supplies are pulled, identify as needed items · Take initiative to ascertain new surgeon’s preferences/needs
  • Awareness and Practice of Standard Precautions: · Wear appropriate eye protection · Report and follow through appropriately on all hazardous exposure
  • Check sterility of supplies: · Examine sterile items for expiration date/indicator strip · Correctly inspects sterile items for integrity · Properly delivers sterile supplies to field · Ascertain appropriate temp and time of sterilizer prior to removing items and properly documents
  • Conduct in-depth patient interview prior to surgery: · Properly ID patient, site, procedure · Identifies allergies · Observe and note sensory perception, physical condition · Assess fears, anxiety, level of knowledge, and educational needs. · Competent to participate in patient/family teaching; teaching needs and teaching effectiveness · Aware of religious and/or cultural belief
  • Consistently displays behavior that enhances the public image of the organization/department, as evidenced by professional care of patients and courteous behavior toward the public, other departments, physicians, and co-workers
  • Create/maintain sterile field at all times: · Keep sterile field 12” from unsterile items · Face sterile field · Does not walk between two sterile fields · Does not reach over, touch sterile field · Set up sterile field immediately prior to case and does not leave unattended · Identify and immediately corrects breaks in technique · Confine, contain, and properly dispose of contaminated items · Function within designated dress code; hair covering, jewelry
  • Demonstrate knowledge of specific surgical procedures: GENERAL, GYN, ORTHO. NEURO, CV, ENT, EYE, OH · Request assistance if needed · Researches unfamiliar procedures · Discuss the procedure with knowledgeable individuals
  • Obtain specific supplies&/or equipment: · Check preference cards prior to case · Has supplies/equipment in the room before case · Make arrangements to obtain special supplies · Check all equipment/instrument for proper functioning and completeness prior · Has a working knowledge of the equipment/instrumentation or seeks assistance · Use supplies judiciously and in a cost-effective manner

  • Licensed Registered Nurse in the State of Florida orRecognized Compact Licensure (subject to Florida State Licensing Requirements, including/not limited to ongoing eligibility and duration provisions)
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Life Support Course (ALS or ACLS) and certification
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Basic Life Support Course (BLS or BCLS) and certification
