Department: Machining / Production

Reports To: Machine Shop Supervisor / Production Manager

Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented CNC Lathe Setup and Operator to join our manufacturing team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the complete setup, operation, and in-process inspection of CNC (Computer Numerical Control) lathes to produce precision parts according to engineering drawings and specifications. This role requires a strong mechanical aptitude, a deep understanding of machining processes, and a commitment to AS 9100 quality and safety.

Key Responsibilities

1. Setup Duties:

-Analyze and interpret engineering blueprints, technical drawings, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

-Select, install, and align appropriate cutting tools, tool holders, and work-holding devices (e.g., chucks, collets, fixtures, bar feeders).

-Load correct CNC programs into the machine controller.

-Establish "zero" and reference points by setting work offsets (G54, G55, etc.) and tool offsets using probes, indicators, or manual touch-off methods.

-Perform first-piece (first-article) inspection by running the program and verifying that all dimensions meet specifications.

-Optimize machining processes by adjusting speeds, feeds, and tool paths (with appropriate approval) to improve efficiency and quality.

2. Operator Duties:

-Operate CNC lathes to run production lots, including loading raw material (bar stock, castings, slugs) and unloading finished parts.

-Monitor machine operation, listen for unusual noises, and observe for any malfunctions or tool wear.

-Perform regular in-process quality checks using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, bore gauges, height gauges, and optical comparators.

-Make necessary offset adjustments to the machine to maintain dimensional accuracy and part conformity within tight tolerances.

-Change worn or broken cutting tools as needed and update corresponding tool offsets.

-Deburr parts as they come off the machine, if required by the process.

3. Maintenance & Safety:

-Perform routine operator-level machine maintenance, including checking and topping off coolant and lubricants, and clearing chips.

-Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area in accordance with 5S principles.

-Adhere to all company safety protocols, procedures, and policies, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

-Troubleshoot and resolve minor machine alarms or production issues.

4. Documentation:

-Accurately complete all required documentation, including production trackers, inspection logs, and machine downtime reports.

-Communicate effectively with supervisors, programmers, and quality inspectors regarding production status, part quality, or any technical issues.

Qualifications and Skills

Required:

-High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.

-Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience in setting up and operating CNC lathes.

-Proven ability to read and interpret complex engineering blueprints and GD&T symbols.

-Proficient in the use of standard precision measuring instruments.

-Strong understanding of G-code and M-code; ability to perform minor program edits and offset adjustments at the controller.

-Excellent mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.

-Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality work.

-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

Preferred:

-Technical certificate or degree in Machine Tool Technology or a related field.

-Experience with Fanuc controllers.

-Experience with multi-axis lathes, including live tooling, sub-spindles, and/or Y-axis.

-Familiarity with 5S lean manufacturing principles.

-Experience with JobBoss.

-Experience in AS 9100 or ISO 9001 environment.

Physical Demands: Must be able to stand for extended periods. Requires manual dexterity, good hand-eye coordination, and the ability to lift and move materials, typically up to 40 lbs.

Work Environment: This position is based in a machine shop environment. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, metal chips, noise, and cutting fluids (coolant).
