The welder/fabricator uses MIG, TIG and/or stick welding to weld together metal products, such as structural components of ships, vessels, or other construction activity that is related to shipyard operations.

Job Duties

The welder/fabricator:

• Determines proper weld procedure either by blueprints, work order, or oral instruction from supervisor.

• Uses electric or fuel-burning arc welding equipment.

• Selects proper electrode wire and sets welding unit to proper amperage or voltage.

• Strikes arc which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode or electrode wire to work piece to join components together. Manually guides electrode along weld line, maintaining length of arc and speed of movement to form specified depth of fusion and size of bead.

• Welds in flat, vertical, horizontal, overhead, and diagonal positions. Examines weld for proper bead size and characteristics.

• Cleans weld joints or work pieces using wire brush, portable grinder air chipper, needle scaler, or chemical bath. Preheats work piece using hand torch or heating unit. Removes excess metal in preparation of part to be welded by using arc gouger.

• Cuts metal plates or structural shapes for assembly using hand torch, metal shear, or metal saw. Position and clamp workpieces together or assemble them on a jig or other type fixture. May tack weld assemblies together prior to final welding.

• Visually examines welds for adherence to specifications. May grind welds or deformities on or in welds prior to completion of work.

• Performs incidental tasks such as transporting tools, materials, and supplies. May use overhead cranes. May also operate company vehicles.

• Wears all of the necessary personal protective equipment, such as hard hats, eye, and hearing protection, gloves, and dust and respiratory protection.

• Follows company policies/procedures and observes safety and security procedures.

Job Requirements

The welder/fabricator must:

• Hold high-school diploma or equivalent. Additional training, such as commercial, shop, technical school or in-house training is a plus.

• Have strong interpersonal/networking skills.

• Be able to read and write alphabetically and numerically.

• Be an effective communicator (both verbal and written).

• Possess time-management, organization and multi-tasking skills.

• Be adaptable, flexible and detail-oriented.

• Must be able to provide verifiable references of past work experience.
