The Principal Engineer of Reliability Programs is both a member of the fleet engineering performance team and reports directly to the manager of Reliability Programs. In this role, they support and guide the team with their continuous improvement skills and problem-solving expertise based on principles of Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) to identify deeper level root cause of system and component reliability drivers.

Summary of responsibilities (not comprehensive of all tasks):

  • Facilitates team-based root cause investigations of top system and component reliability drivers using RCM based FMEA analysis
  • Provides expert level problem solving guidance using continuous improvement tools and techniques such as Six Sigma, Lean, or 8D
  • Responsible for routinely following up and measuring the effectiveness of previously accomplished corrective actions as a requirement of the Continuous Airworthiness Surveillance System (CASS) program
  • Utilizes statistical based modeling software to perform failure rate distribution analysis of components to support decision-making for adding, changing or removing scheduled maintenance tasks
  • Analyzes operational and routine scheduled maintenance data trends to assess the long-term mechanical performance and health of the Delta fleets and provides routine reporting of those trends to engineering fleet teams.
  • Supports setting annual TechOps fleet performance standards and justifying those recommendations to the Reliability Control Board
  • May be responsible for preparing and presenting presentations to all levels of management as well as regulatory agencies
  • Practices safety-conscious behaviors in all operational processes and procedures


What you need to succeed (minimum qualifications)

  • Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering, analytics, applied statistics, or computer science with at least 8 years of experience in reliability, engineering, or applied statistics; a master's degree in a related field plus at least 3 years of the above experience; or in the absence of these specific degrees, must have 10 years of the above related experience
  • Six sigma/Lean training with a min. certification of green belt (black belt preferred)
  • Strong experience performing FMEA type processes root cause analysis
  • Demonstrated understanding of scheduled maintenance strategies and RCM principles
  • Must be fluent with statistical analysis modeling failure distribution rates such as Weibull distribution modeling
  • Must possess good written and verbal communication skills and be proficient with Microsoft Office software products
  • Must be able to influence and work effectively with a variety of people, both internally and externally
  • (If transferring internally) Must be performing satisfactorily in present position
  • Where permitted by applicable law, must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccine by date of hire to be considered for U.S.-based job, if not currently employed by Delta Air Lines, Inc.


What will give you a competitive edge (preferred qualifications)

  • Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE) or Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) from American Society of Quality (ASQ)
  • Aviation or similar heavy industry experience with pro-active asset failure management
  • Experience using data analysis tools/languages such as SAS, Python, and SQL
