We welcome candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.DescriptionThe Viral Reservoirs Unit of the Emory Center For AIDS Research (CFAR) Virology and Molecular Biomarkers Core, Viral Reservoir Unit is seeking qualified candidates for a Lead Research Specialist position. The selected candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Mavigner, Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Emory University School of Medicine and director of the CFAR Core’s Viral Reservoirs Unit. She works at gaining a better understanding of HIV/SIV persistence and investigating novel HIV cure approaches in nonhuman primates. The Core’s Viral Reservoirs Unit is located at the Health Sciences Research Building (HSRB). It develops and implements assays that quantify the HIV/SIV reservoir under ART in non-human primates for Emory scientists and external researchers.Center for AIDS Research: Virology and Molecular Biomarkers Core (https://cfar.emory.edu/cores/virology-and-molecular-biomarkers-core/)The Lead Research Specialist will perform quantitative assays, optimize and develop new assays and be involved in administrative tasks related to the Unit functioning. Principal procedures involve cell culture, flow cytometry and molecular biology.JOB DESCRIPTION:Under minimal supervision, performs a variety of specialized and complex research and laboratory tests and procedures.

Uses independent judgment in applying or adapting scientific techniques.

May assist in protocol design.

Investigates and proposes alternative experimental procedures for consideration by a principal investigator.

Assists in planning and scheduling research procedures.

Analyzes and interprets results of studies.

Demonstrates and trains others in the proper use/operation of laboratory techniques and equipment.

Calibrates, troubleshoots and performs routine repair and maintenance of equipment.

Reviews literature for related research developments and techniques and compiles findings.

Monitors laboratory processes to maintain quality assurance standards.

Records results of studies, compiles and analyzes data and prepares charts and graphs.

Monitors the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous substances.

Performs related responsibilities as required.

Employees in this classification may be required to work with, take specific precautions against and/or be immunized against potentially hazardous agents.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Bachelor's degree in a scientific field and two years of research experience, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Experience in molecular biology is preferred.

Experience with droplet digital PCR would be a plus.

A background in virology (particularly of HIV infection) is preferred.
