REMARKABLE EVENT FOR UP-AND-COMING JOURNALISTS

AND THOSE ENTERING OR ALREADY IN THE FIELD OF MEDIA

Wednesday, April 24, at CNN, courtesy of the White House Fellows VIP Tour of CNN included

You must get tickets through EventBrite; see link, below.

The White House Fellows program, started in 1964, offers talented and motivated individuals early in their careers a chance to work at the highest levels of government for a year. The position is paid ($122,000 a year) and completely nonpartisan. It is common for Democrats to work in Republican administrations and vice versa.

On Wednesday, April 24, up-and-coming journalists and media people of all types (students, writers, editors, videographers, on-the-air talent, PR, advertising, design, promotion, media finance, etc.) are invited to learn more about the White House Fellows program.

The hope is that many in the room will be inspired to apply to become White House Fellows one day. The White House Fellowship program is a leadership development program. Those who apply to become White House Fellows must show evidence of academic and professional success at an early age, with a particular interest in public policy and good governance. The goal of the program is to see those who are selected go on and do great things later.

So this event is for students and those early in their careers. The average age while serving as a White House Fellow is 34. It is common for people to learn about the Fellowship years before applying.

Tom Johnson, former president of CNN (and before that, publisher of the Los Angeles Times), will moderate a panel discussion on "The Future of Journalism (and the Business of Media)." Tom served as a White House Fellow in 1965-66.

The panel will include: Kevin Riley (editor of the Atlanta Constitution Journal); Maria Saporta (writer for the Atlanta Business Chronicle and editor of the SaportaReport); Jewel Wicker (entertainment writer see JewelWicker.com); Thomas Wheatley (writer for Atlanta Magazine); and Dianne Gallagher (national correspondent for CNN).

This FREE event starts at 4 p.m. and ends at 6 p.m. For those who can arrive early, there will be two free VIP tours of CNN before the official event, starting at 2:30 p.m. (more info on this on our EventBrite page, see link, below).

Members of the White House Fellows program will give a brief presentation on the program, which graduates of the program uniformly agree is a life-changing experience.

The White House Fellowship is particularly well-suited for those interested in media, politics, good governance, community service and public policy.

People from all backgrounds (law, medicine, the military, business, academia, etc.) are welcome to apply to become White House Fellows, but this event on the 24th is especially targeted at those keenly interested in media as a profession (the organizer of this event started as a cub reporter at the Kansas City Star, became a VP at the Los Angeles Times, and, in recent years, has been working on a digital news startup. Along the way he served a year as a White House Fellow).

Seating is limited to the first 100 ticket holders.
