Software Developer to provide development support for our NEDSS (National Electronic Disease Surveillance System) project with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For this project, we develop, maintain, and support the NBS (NEDSS Base System), a web-based disease surveillance system used by public health jurisdictions to collect and analyze disease occurrence data, as well as to report this data to the CDC.
Team members support key processes in the development and support of the NBS application using an Agile development process. Candidates must be comfortable and experienced with development in Java J2EE and have familiarity with SQL Server database. Position is for contract work. The position is based out of the GDIT office in Atlanta, GA (Brookhaven), with the potential for some ‘work from home’ days.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Develop system functionality using

    Java J2EE (translates detailed design into computer software).
  • Conduct tests, debug, and refine the software to produce the required product.
  • Provide design and programming documentation.
  • Provide updates in all Agile rituals (Sprint planning, Sprint retros, daily stand-ups, etc.).
  • Troubleshoot defects/other issues raised internally or by state partners.
  • Write SQL queries in support of development and/or troubleshooting.
  • Participate in backlog grooming and design sessions.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
  • College graduate (BS/MS degree) with at least 5 years of experience in computer programming and/or information systems development or a relevant technical discipline.
  • Experience in

    Java J2EE experience with

    JSP, Servlets, EJB
  • Experience in

    JavaScript, HTML
  • Experience in SQL Server database
  • Familiarity with AJAX Tools like DWR, YUI

    JQuery
  • Familiarity with

    XML, XSL technologies
  • Understanding of data/metadata and relational databases
  • Basic technical writing skills and the ability to communicate clearly
Desired:
  • Understanding of Struts MVC Framework
  • Experience with data integration engines such as Orion Rhapsody
  • Experience with Agile development tools, such as Atlassian Jira and Confluence
  • Experience with SAS Reporting
  • Experience with ETL tools/development
  • Experience working on CDC or other government project(s)
  • Familiarity with Public Health/Public Health Surveillance Systems
  • Experience with HL7 standards and messaging
  • Public Health Domain experience (understanding of public health standards like HL7, CDA, LOINC, SNOMED)
