1st Grade Teacher Needed
Given the uncertainty and anticipated disruptions for the upcoming school year, we’re a group of parents looking to create a small homeschool for 1st grade for 2020 - 2021 in the Boise North End. The shift online last year made it impossible to meet work demands, children were too isolated, and, with immunocompromised parents, the risk of COVID is serious.
Our interest is not a different curriculum from what public schools provide, but a quality and consistent learning experience while staying healthy throughout this pandemic.
Our plan:
4 to 6 first-graders in a safe, enriching school and aftercare from 8 - 4 daily, using the BSD calendar;
families are strict with social-distancing and other precautions for avoiding COVID;
an experienced 1st-grade teacher for 5 hours a day (8:30 - 1:30);
shared “after school” care: each family would be responsible for one afternoon a week (1:30 - 4).
Tentative schedule
We provide a schedule to convey priorities/expectations - it’s entirely up to the teacher
how to best structure the day.
8:00 arrive, wash hands, settle in
8:30 instruction begins: reading / literacy + break
10:15 math + break
11:30 writing + social studies/science
12:15 lunch
1:00 end school day: afternoon meeting
1:30 parent-led recess (walk to Camelsback, go on bike rides, etc)
2:30 co-op (parent-led: piano, art, French, skiing, soccer, ?)
3:45 clean-up, pack up, pick up/walk/bike home
Minimum qualifications:
- licensed elementary teacher (K-8) with experience in an early-elementary classroom,
willing to commit to a semester or year teaching 4 - 6 students in a home setting;
- dedicated to meeting or exceeding standards with engaging, thoughtful curriculum;
- excited by the potential affordances and challenges of a small group in a home setting;
- recognizing that members of our school are vulnerable, you are dedicated to social
isolation for yourself and your family throughout the school year.
Who would be a great fit?
- experienced 1st grade teacher, skilled at blending direct instruction and cooperative
learning;
- well-versed in current best practices in math, reading and writing instruction;
- consistent, responsive communication with parents;
- able to differentiate instruction to meet needs of advanced students.
Salary:
- our goal is to match the Boise School District salary schedule, prorated for part-time, but
are unable to offer additional benefits (PERSI, healthcare);
- we will set up an account for all instructional materials and expenses.
