EDUCATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent

Veterinary Technician Certification (CVT) desirable but not required.

Previous On-The-Job Training desirable when not a CVT.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum two years experience working with or around horses a must. Previous equine veterinary technician or assistant, preferred.

PERSONAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum of 18 years old.

Genuinely enjoys working with horses and is able to deal with them even when they are stressed, ill or in pain.

Has an interest in assisting veterinarian and in educating owner on our practices.

Genuinely enjoys working with people and is able to deal with them even during stressful times.

Can stay calm and efficient during a medical crisis.

Is well-spoken and approaches his/her job duties in a mature nature.

Is experienced in the teamwork approach and works well with all levels of hospital team members.

Has excellent communication skills.

Physical Effort: Work requires lunging and jogging/trotting horses in hand. Walking or standing for extended periods of time; able to sometimes work in a bent position.

Working conditions: May be exposed to (but not limited to): equine blood, unpleasant odors, noises and manure/urine. May be exposed to foot being stepped on by horse. Will be required to work outside year round (as needed) in all types of climates. Hours are Monday-Thursday (8am -5pm) possible after-hours emergencies and required to be on-call one weekend day per week unless veterinarian is out of town.

Can provide friendly, compassionate care to patients and clients.

Can conduct oneself in a confident and professional manner even when stressed and/or focused on individual tasks.

Is a self-starter, motivated and understands the importance of a clean and orderly facility, does not hesitate to clean or organize as part of a normal job duty.

Can legibly keep accurate medical records in accordance hospital policy.

Can prepare and maintain the exam/treatment areas.

Can perform physical assessments; record observations

Can effectively restrain horses even when large or difficult.

Maintains positive, cooperative relationships with other employees.

Learn to handle clients' medical questions with confidence and efficiently communicate questions to veterinarian when appropriate.

Learn and explain necessary follow-up and home care instructions to client.

Learn and understand usage, dosage, and common side-effects for commonly used drugs and can readily explain them to clients.

Can assist the veterinarian in minor medical procedures, prepares patients for procedure, sets up for minor procedures, monitors patients and clean up after procedure.

Can properly follow sterility guidelines; before, during and after a minor procedure.

Learn and perform clinical laboratory procedures such as fecal flotation analysis etc

Can effectively position and hold x-ray plate for radiographs.

Can prepare a patient and the machine for an x-ray and/or ultrasound procedure.

Can admit patients into the hospital.

Can discharge patients based on veterinarian's orders, ensuring that patient is in a medically appropriate state.

Can clean stalls, rake leaves, sweep etc, if necessary.

Can see or anticipate what needs to be done and do it without being asked.
