Tetris Expert aka Kiln Loader (Boise Bench)

Vacancy expired!

How are your Tetris skills? Do you excel at math, puzzles or video games? Have you ever been described as anal-retentive? If so, we'd like to talk to you about kiln loading.

Ceramica, Boise's oldest and only paint your own pottery studio, is looking to immediately hire a permanent, dedicated clear glazer / kiln loader to handle our back-of-studio operations (2 kilns).

While experience with clear glazing using the half dip method and stilting pieces for kiln firing is highly preferred, it is not necessary. Any experience with pottery, glazes, kiln loading and/or kiln maintenance is helpful but not necessary. If you have no kiln experience, we can teach you but we find that detail-oriented, analytical perfectionists with strong spatial relationship awareness do best in this position. So, again we ask, how are your Tetris skills?

Besides being a detail-oriented, analytical perfectionist with strong spatial awareness, the ideal candidate is self-motivated, conscientious, responsible, RELIABLE, communicative, dedicated to quality and takes great pride in their work. Artistic ability is not required as the candidate will not be assisting customers in the studio. This position is not about creativity; it's about how many pottery pieces you can optimally stilt and fit in a kiln each and every time you load a kiln (i.e. detail-oriented).

Responsibilities include:

Observation of the studio event calendar and daily studio traffic to anticipate pottery piece volumes and adjust kiln loading schedule as needed.

Meeting delivery deadlines for all fired painted pottery and there's a lot of it.

Shelf space management as pieces are drying, being clear glazed and queued up for kiln.

Clear glazing of all painted pieces using the half-dip method (we can teach you).

Loading of kilns using stilts with a special emphasis on proper sanding and optimal loading techniques for efficient and quality firings (we can teach you).

Kiln maintenance and troubleshooting of improper firing results.

Improvements in procedures, policies, quality and workflow. Self-motivated to do research and trainings on optimal clear glazing and kiln loading as well as kiln maintenance.

Must be able to bend in all directions, squat and lift up to 25 pounds. Being on the tall side is helpful but not necessary as it helps to reach the bottom shelf of the kiln when bending over.

Cleanliness and organization of the entire back operations area of the business.

Ownership of the entire back operations area of the business - you would be there to simplify the lives of the owner and manager who are plenty busy. We are a company of high expectations and growth. Do a great job and be rewarded accordingly.

Days off are Wednesdays and Thursdays and working weekends, our busiest time, is a must; otherwise, the work hours are flexible but tied directly to the kiln firing schedule and finished piece delivery deadlines. Hours will range from 20 - 40 per week depending on seasonal volume. Pay will depend on experience with bonuses available for exceptional performance. Ceramica is a smoke-free and drug-free workplace.

Interviews will be conducted within 10 days of this posting. No phone calls please. If you meet the above qualifications, please e-mail a resume in Word or pdf format along with a cover letter explaining why you are the best candidate for the job or mail it to:
