Job Title:Research Engineer II - Decatur, ILDepartment/Function:Research & DevelopmentJob Description:Research Engineer II - Decatur, ILThis is an exempt level role.Position Summary:The Research Engineer is responsible for driving process improvement projects and implementing new technologies in existing production and piloting facilities.The engineer will oversee the evaluation of existing production equipment and recommend improvements in support of the production of chemicals, food and nutrition ingredients.The engineer provides mass and energy balances, P&IDs, economic evaluation, as well as supporting documentation and project reports. This position is expected to work across various groups including vendors, contractors, operations, commercial, and R&D.Responsibilities

The following represents the majority of the duties performed by the position, but are not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary.

Conduct engineering studies and recommend process and control changes for food, nutrition and industrial chemical processes.

Develop integrated plant-wide process and subsystem models.

Evaluate production and pilot processes upsets and determine root causes and recommend process changes to improve performance

Prepare mass and energy balances of unit operations or whole plants.

Assess various performance specifications for key unit operations or equipment.

Support plant operations to troubleshoot production processes and determine root cause analysis.

Design of experiments for plant and piloting trials

Interact with plant engineers, vendor, and contractors to setup equipment in plant.

Support pilot trials in industrial environments.

Design experiments and collect data to provide technical support to existing facilities.

Write detail reports and prepare comprehensive presentations.

Implement and supervise the proposed changes in the field as well as provide technical support to the existing processes.

Plan and execute engineering and research projects.

EducationA Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent is requiredExperienceFour to eight years of experience in process operations and/or process design in the food and/or chemical industry. The individual must have extensive experience with a range of unit operations such as filtration, distillation, evaporation, centrifugation, carbon treatment, ion exchange, chromatographic separation, solids handling, and varied chemical reactors. Experience in production and/or pilot improvement projects is required. Experience with evaluating and implementing new technologies into existing production facilities is desired.Skills

Capable of understanding complex system interactions and able to identify the root causes of process irregularities.

Must possess well-developed analytical skills to analyze and interpret scientific data when designing and evaluating chemical processes.

Good written and oral communication skills to communicate with managers, engineering, and R&D staff via reports and presentations.

Strong organizational skills to manage large amounts of data and multiple projects.

Able to function within matrix project management environment.

Strong leadership skills to encourage open collaboration, provide technical expertise, and positively contribute to research teams.

Effective communication of engineering data with research, operations, and business staff.

Job Requirements

Must be willing to travel.

Travel to multiple locations is expected.

Must be willing to switch to a shift schedule if needed for plant trials.

Comfortable managing/participate in various projects concurrently

Candidate will need to work within established company and laboratory safety guidelines.

Willingness to spend time in plant areas, tolerate extreme temperatures, walk long distances, stand, climb stairs and ladders and move through close spaces.
