Job Title:Techno-economic Engineer, Decatur, ILDepartment/Function:Research & DevelopmentJob Description:Technoeconomic Engineer, Decatur, ILThis is a full time, exempt positionPosition Summary:The Technoeconomic Engineer is responsible for using engineering principals, tools and software to model existing, changes to existing, and completely new processes to inform research and development project priorities, business decisions and portfolio valuation. The position requires the engineer to interact within multi-disciplinary groups to gather information, complete various modeling activities and effectively communicate results to project leadership. The precision of these models will align with the project development phase with certain accuracy to allow leadership to prioritize next phase of work and to inform high level business decisions. The engineer may also be required to lead modeling focused projects within a structured Technology development process and delegate modeling assignments to Modeling Center interns.ResponsibilitiesThe following represents most of the duties performed by the position but are not meant to be all-inclusive nor prevent other duties from being assigned when necessary!Capital Cost EstimatingUse expert level ACCE knowledge to build capital cost estimate of the appropriate level of detail.Assist with development, use and maintain the standardized ACCE templates and capital estimating work process!Work with internal and external partners to get costing information.Partner with internal resources to ensure a database of equipment, material, feedstock, utility costs, historical project costs are aligned and up to date.Process and Financial ModelingUse expert knowledge of Aspen Plus and excel to develop process models to the appropriate level of detail Develop mass and energy balances (Aspen Plus, SuprePro, Excel) for early phase economic evaluationsSupport risk management activities by running sensitivities (Monte Carlo) to advise the prioritization of de-risking activitiesPartner with departments to ensure alignment of financial modeling assumptions and templatesDevelop and maintain standardized process and financial modeling work processes and templatesPeer review models and outputs to ensure quality of work.Develop FEL0 quality process flow diagrams, material and energy balances, and major equipment listsExtract information from patents and make needed assumptions, document, communicate and translate to engineering model input assumptionsProject ManagementLead projects within a documented, agile-based project management structureEfficiently move projects from idea to pipeline using the defined work processFunction as the primary, initial engineering contact for idea intake and 0A workOwn financial models for the larger RPDG projectsEfficiently gather, consolidate, and confirm validity/quality of information for projectsArchive project information for future useWell organized and able to effectively prioritize own work to deliver encouraged results on multiple projects led concurrentlyEducationA Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or equivalent is requiredExperienceA proven ability in process modeling, process operations, process optimization and/or engineering design in the food and/or chemical industry. The individual must have extensive experience with a range modeling platforms and skills including but not limited to: ASPEN suite including ASPEN plus and ACCE, SuperPro Designer, Crystal Ball, MATLAB, Excel. Experience in evaluating and/or piloting new technologies is highly desirable.
