AmeriCorps Award: Position is eligible for an AmeriCorps Eduation Award of $2,255 (pre-tax) upon successful completion of the program.
Program Basics:
The water quality program falls under the Resource Management division at the Indiana Dunes National Park. The Resource Management division's primary role is to assess, monitor, and restore the natural resources of the park. The water quality program does this work with a focus on the park's lake, river, stream, wetland, and other aquatic resources.
The duties of this position will focus on water quality monitoring and assessment of the Indiana Dunes National Park's aquatic resources. The intern will be responsible for carrying out tasks in the lab, field, and office settings. Work in the field will include performing surveys and collecting physical, chemical, biological, and bacteriological samples using standard methods and measuring equipment.
Work in the lab will include the processing of these samples using standard methods for surface water analysis. Work in the office setting will involve data entry, database management, and quality assurance and quality control (QAQC) measures. All work is performed with the intent of assessing the quality and biotic integrity of the park's aquatic resources. All training on standard methods, analytical procedures, and use of specialized equipment will be provided.
Duties & responsibilities may include:
The primary projects involve continuation of long-term monitoring of waterways of interest for the park and inventory & monitoring of the park's biological assemblages and habitat assessment. The results of these efforts will support long-term monitoring efforts that assist the park with identifying trends in ecological integrity and informing management decisions.
The Interns responsibilities include both field and laboratory work, in addition to data management.

Preference will be given to applicants that have demonstrable experience or an academic or career interest in the ecology, biology, aquatic ecology, or other related environmental sciences.
Mandatory Requirements:
Minimum age is 18
Possession of a current valid drivers license with good driving record
Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
Interns will be required to submit a final report during their term of service.
