Job DescriptionThis is a non-merit position with the Iowa Department of Inspections & Appeals Office of the State Public Defender. Positions in this class are exempt from the screening and referral requirements of the Iowa Department of Administrative Services - Human Resources Enterprise.In a trainee capacity, assists attorneys in the pretrial investigation of criminal defense cases, including gathering facts, locating and interviewing clients and witnesses, performing criminal history checks and other public record searches, obtaining necessary photographic or video evidence, collecting relevant news articles, obtaining and evaluating other physical evidence, and performing other investigative tasks as assigned.Prepares written reports of investigative activities for attorneys. Attends initial appearance and conducts initial interviews of jailed clients. Serves and delivers court documents, such as subpoenas, affidavits, and reports, at the direction of attorneys. Assists in the preparation of defense strategy, including gathering and organizing evidence and testimony in preparation for depositions and trials and locating experts in various fields and coordinating the use of expert witnesses.Assists in monitoring cases for conflicts and maintaining iDOCIT client information database. Serve as trial assistant and defense witness liaison during trials, assisting attorneys to marshall evidence and witnesses, communicate with clients and family members, and aids in jury selection process. Performing other duties as directed by the Local Public Defender Supervisor.Minimum Qualification RequirementsGraduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in law enforcement, corrections, criminology, police science, accounting, finance or law;ORgraduation from a four-year accredited college or university and experience equal to one year of full-time work requiring knowledge in law enforcement, corrections, or general or criminal investigation;ORa combination of education and experience substituting one year of the above qualifying full-time experience for each 30 semester hours of the required general college or university course work;ORemployees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes experience equal to two years of full-time work in classes providing journey level knowledge, abilities, and skills in agency unemployment insurance or public assistance benefit programs, law enforcement, corrections or administrative hearings procedures.For additional information, please click on thislink to view the job description.Additional Qualification RequirementsApplicants for positions in the Department of Inspections and Appeals must undergo a background investigation which includes a criminal history check and a dependent adult and child abuse registry check.Join Us!Whether it's caring for those in need, making highways safer, or improving agriculture production, the work that we do matters to the people of Iowa.We take our responsibilities and the public trust very seriously.
