Work will include components of direct patient care, nutrition, observation, documentation, transportation and general maintenance of the patient environment. Adheres to the principles of Service Excellence Guiding Behaviors and the philosophy and mission of Mercy in all aspects of job performance.#ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:1.Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Mercy standards.2.Makes accurate observations of patient's appearance, behavior, affect and interaction with peers, staff, and family in various situations. Makes observations of patient's reaction to medications as appropriate. Documents accurately, timely, and objectively.3.Assists with patient admission and dismissal according to department guidelines.4.Establishes rapport easily and is available for 1:1 interactions with patients. Demonstrates therapeutic communication skills.5.Orients patient/family to unit program. Does basic patient/family teaching; i.e., reality orientation, relaxation, self-esteem, self-responsibility, etc. Refers patient/family teaching to appropriate discipline when indicated.6.Is aware of patient program/treatment plan and works with patient to achieve treatment goals.7.Obtains vital signs – temperature, blood pressure, pulse, respirations, and pain score; height/weight; intake/output; and records the information appropriately, accurately and in a timely manner with notification to the nurses as needed.8.Maintains knowledge and demonstrates competency in the use of patient equipment i.e. manual and automatic blood pressure machine, tympanic thermometer, pulse oximeters, bladder scanner, restraints, electronic scales, gait belts and intermittent pneumatic compression stockings.9.Communicates and collaborates effectively with Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse and other multidisciplinary team members as well as patients, families and significant others. Obtains accurate and thorough report from nursing staff. Participates in bedside handoff at shift change.10.Is Able to implement care while providing the necessary prioritization and guidance from the RN and/or LPN in times of high volume and/or high acuity.11.Prior to meal service in designated patient care areas, verifies patient and diet information; insures availability of appropriate meal trays, and completes daily refrigerator temperature log.12.Verifies, assembles, heats and serves meal trays according to department guidelines and nutritional needs of patient. Records fluid intake, calorie counts and appetite assessment when specified.13.Maintains cleanliness of the patient environment – empties patient garbage, linen bags. launders patient’s clothing, stocks clean linens and supplies.14.Conducts therapeutic activity groups as assigned.15.Helps to improve patient care through participation in hospital/unit activities department meetings, committees, conferences, and in- services16.Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Mercy and Trinity Health Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.17.Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Mercy and Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.18.Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees, and Mercy business.19.Demonstrates general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)20.Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by persons assigned to this classification. Must have successfully completed a 75 hour credit (or more) Nursing Assistant Program (Certified Nurse Assistant) from an accredited school, but does not need to be active on the Iowa registry. Maintains certification in B.C.L.S. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.) Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
