Job Description

TITLE: Custodian

REPORTS TO: Building Principal, Maintenance Supervisor, and/or Head Custodian

JOB GOAL: To provide all students with a physical learning environment that is safe, clean, attractive, pleasant, and smooth-functioning.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Keep building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean at all times.

2. Shovel, plow, and/or sand walks and steps as appropriate.

3. Check daily to ensure that all exit doors are unlocked and all panic bars are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.

4. Raise the United States and Kansas flag at or before 8:00am on each school day, and lower it at or after 3:30pm.

5. Clean classrooms daily and dust furniture and woodwork.

6. Clean corridors after school each day, and/or during the day when their condition requires it.

7. Scrub, hose down, and disinfect toilet floors daily and clean all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.

8. Wash all windows on both the inside and outside at least twice each year and more frequently if necessary.

9. Keep the grounds free from rubbish.

10. Perform such yard keeping chores as grass cutting, tree trimming, etc. to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition.

11. Keep all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation.

12. Clean all whiteboards at least once a week.

14. Make minor building repairs.

15. Report major repair needs correctly and in an accurate and timely manner.

16. Maintain, on a regular schedule, all motors and other mechanical equipment requiring scheduled servicing.

17. Report any damage and/or vandalism to school property immediately to the principal.

18. Remain on the school premises during school hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the principal.

19. Assume responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, security systems activated, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off. (This duty may be delegated)

20. Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisition needed replacements far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian.

21. Conduct an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair, including replacement of bulbs, tubes, filters, etc.

22. Move furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.

23. Comply with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste while wearing necessary personal safety equipment.

23. Conduct periodic inspections and tests of all electrical installations in the school to ensure their safe condition.

24. Cooperate with city and state inspectors involved in health, fire, and safety.

25. Perform routine janitorial duties as required.

26. Attendance is required.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 4hours/day, 12 months/year (benefits-eligible)

SALARY:$10.50 - $15.50/hour (wage determined by years of relevant experience)

EVALUATION: Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the Building Principal and Assistant Director of Operations

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. High school graduate, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

2. Good knowledge of maintenance methods, materials and equipment and ability to use them economically and efficiently.

3. Ability to understand and follow simple verbal and written directions.

4. Extensive janitorial experience, some of which shall have been at the level of the position.

5. Some experience as a semi-skilled handyman.

6. Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

7. Dependability.

8. Ability to get along well with others.

9. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as are determined to be appropriate and acceptable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Standing / walking up to 6 to 8 hours in an 8-hour workday.

2. Squatting and forward bending to perform job duties that include lifting and use of cleaning equipment for 34-66% of the work shift.

3. Lifting boxes of supplies weighing up to 50 lb. from the floor to waist height at a frequency of occasional (6-33%) level for an 8-hour workday.

4. Lifting of trash containers from waist weight to 4-1/2 feet high, that weigh 60 lb. This task is at an occasional level for an 8-hour workday.

5. Moving classroom furniture out of the rooms for cleaning. Furniture that can weigh up to 100 lb. that does require a 2-man lift. This task is at a rare (1-5%) frequency of an 8-hour workday.

6. Overhead lifting of supplies in the storage area items weigh from 5-20 lb. This task is at a frequency of occasional for an 8-hour workday.

7. Carrying of cleaning supplies weighing up to 50 lb. for a distance of 50 feet. This task is at a rare level for an 8-hour workday.

8. One handed carry of cleaning solutions that weigh 45 lb. for a distance of 50 feet. This task is at a rare level for an 8-hour workday.

9. Pushing and pulling of equipment i.e. floor buffer, hand trucks, and chair carts. Push/pull forces range from 5-50 lb. of force, with the 50 lb. push and pulled for a distance of 100 feet. This task is at an occasional frequency.

10. Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces. The amount and kind of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body

equilibrium.

11. Crawling: Moving about on hands and knees or hands and feet.

12. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.

13. Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing/keyboarding or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handing.

14. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm.

15. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.

16. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

17. Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

18. Repetitive motions: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/ or fingers.

20. Visual AcuityThis is a minimum standard based on the criteria of accuracy and neatness of work for janitors, sweepers, etc.

21. The worker is subject to all environmental conditions: Activities occur inside and outside.

22. The worker is subject to extreme cold: Temperatures below 32 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

23. The worker is subject to extreme heat. Temperatures above 100 degrees for periods of more than one hour.

24. The worker is subject to hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals.

25. The worker is subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: Fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation.

Ladder climb (Frequent): Climb up/down a standard ladder to perform overhead/ceiling work.
Elevated work (Occasional): Must be able to work with arms overhead to perform painting tasks.
Repeated partial squat (Occasional): Must be able to squat to perform lifts.
Forward bend position (Occasional): Must be in a forward bend position to be able to perform work-day tasks.
