status eligible to include special appointing authorities.Learn more about this agencyResponsibilitiesThis position is located within the VA Eastern Kansas Healthcare

System, Topeka, provide food service to patients in a large Medical

Center composed of geriatric, medical, surgical, and substance abuse

treatment patients. May perform a variety of duties including, but

not limited to:

- Portions nourishments and delivers to patients;

- Sets up service ware and dispensing equipment;

- Sets up tray or cafeteria lines with hot or cold food and

supplies line during meal within established time frames;

- Stocks shelves, assists in storage of subsistence and operating

supplies;

- Works in dish room scraping soiled trays, stacking dishes, etc.;

- Loads and operates dishwashers;

- Washes pots and pans and operates the utensil washer;

- Assists with clean-up of any area assigned (sweeps, mops, does

special cleaning of equipment, delivers supplies, and hauls

trash);

- De-stains and de-scales dishes and machines;

- Cleans food storage, production and service areas, equipment and

floors;

- Performs tray delivery and retrieval from patients' bedside or

dining room and returns soiled trays to the kitchen after meals;

- Reviews accuracy of trays based on computerized tray ticket;

- Refers to and uses computer generated lists, labels, and reports

to enhance delivery of patient meals and supplements;

- Performs tray and table service to patients seated at tables and

assists those needing help;

- Serves food items in correct portions according to written menu;

- Portions desserts in standardized quantities for dining room and

cafeteria meal service using established food handling methods;

- Serves hot or cold foods, beverages, etc. on tray assembly line

or in cafeteria setting;

- Prepares toast, coffee and a variety of simple fruit and

vegetable salads;

- Performs heavy-duty cleaning tasks throughout the food service

and related areas such as cleaning ceilings and transoms,

cleaning exhaust hoods, cleaning spaces under and behind kitchen

equipment; and

- Performs all other duties as assigned.Work Schedule: Full-Time, various, rotating shifts including

weekends and holidays.

and walking, frequent bending and stooping, pushing heavy food

lifting and moving of objects over 45 pounds.Working Conditions: Work is mainly performed in an institutional

kitchen environment with the usual hazards of noise, steam, heat,

cold, wet floors, sharp blades, cleaning and sanitizing chemicals

and commercial food preparation equipment.EducationThis job does not have an education qualification requirement.Additional informationReceiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave:

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per

pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served

as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal

employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or

active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be

used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such
