Job Description

The Database Engineer (DE) will be primarily responsible for KIPP New Orleans data management and reporting initiatives. The DE will manage the KIPP New Orleans Schools’ regional data warehouse and its connections to our in-house business intelligence tool, which our schools use to gain powerful insight from data. The ideal candidate will have a laser-like focus on improving the behind-the-scenes structure and flow of student data between all our systems, and on programming and designing our business intelligence tool to visualize student data effectively for academic and operations staff across the region.

The DE will serve as an authoritative voice on data storage and management, provide expert input and troubleshooting support for other key data systems and databases used by other teams across the organization. As a member of a growing organization and team, they will collaborate on other cyclical data management, analysis and reporting projects and systems/process improvement projects.

Responsibilities

Data Warehouse Management

  • Data ETL Processes – Define and implement necessary processes to consolidate and extract data from disparate sources (e.g. Excel, Salesforce.com, and SQL Server). Load new data, such as student test scores and school information, into databases. Extract and manipulate data as needed through database querying and the development of database objects, such as views and stored procedures.
  • Maintain and, where needed, improve or implement new data solutions in, the KIPP New Orleans data warehouse to ensure it is meeting all requirements placed upon it and operating efficiently and reliably.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation for the KNOS data warehouse.
  • Quality Assurance - Ensure ongoing quality of data in databases. Perform quality control on data, designing quality assurance and data validation processes as necessary. Investigate and resolve data quality issues discovered during analysis.

Report Engineering

  • Report Development – Partner with key internal stakeholders to understand KIPP data and define requirements for applications. Own entire life-cycle of development of SQL Server-based applications, including documentation of design approach, implementation of requested functionality, and comprehensive testing. Develop reports and dashboards using applications such as Excel, Excel Services, SSRS, Tableau and Performance Point.
  • Design, develop and deliver / implement business intelligence solutions that meet the vision of the KIPP New Orleans Data team.
  • Be on call (during critical assessment windows) to respond to database or BI issues outside of regular business hours

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Develop predictive models with student data to support the academics and student support teams in allocating resources efficiently.
  • Support other teams as necessary (talent, operations, student support, and academics) to determine additional database, programming, and data visualization needs that can support the overall priorities of KIPP New Orleans.

Other

  • Be able to clearly communicate complex technical solutions in clear, concise and easily readable format by both technical and non-technical personnel.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal (i.e. day-to-day discussions, team meetings) and written (requirements and design specifications) form, as well as have an overall ability to be clear and concise in all communications.
  • Support the development of the individual in the data analyst role from a professional and technical perspective with the goal of improving team redundancies.
  • Travel to schools across New Orleans as necessary, and perform additional job-related duties as requested.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge and experience with SQL, Python, R (or other statistical package), and business intelligence technologies.
  • Hands on experience designing and building reports using applications such as Crystal Reports, SSRS and Tableau.
  • Proficient in relational database design, Transact SQL, MDX and stored procedure development.
  • Adept at converting business requirements into technical design specifications and technical documentation skills.
  • Excellent time management skills needed to balance multiple priorities and ensure delivery of high quality products.
  • Experience using advanced statistical techniques with large data sets.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and train personnel.
  • Adept at working with a small team in a fast paced, multi-faceted environment
  • Positive attitude, sense of humor and eagerness to learn.
  • Interest in working in an entrepreneurial non-profit environment, and a belief that all children can learn

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or a related field, OR
  • Master’s degree in similar field.
  • At least 3 (three) years of experience in data solutions development
