About The Telling Room

At The Telling Room (tellingroom.org), we empower youth through writing and share their voices with the world. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success.

Your Position

The Telling Rooms Communications Manager is responsible for all communications and public engagement activity to support our strategic objectives.

We are seeking an experienced individual to lead our communications, serve as a key spokesperson, and help shape the organizations future through brand stewardship and sustainability efforts.

This is a full-time position and will require travel and some evening and weekend hours.

This position reports directly to the Executive Director.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Strategy, Vision, and Brand

Develop, implement, and execute an annual communications and events plan

Lead the creative and written development of all print and electronic communications and collateral materials

Cultivate and maintain relationships with reporters, bloggers, and other members of the media

Develop media pitches and write press releases

Manage website content, including updates to reflect TR news, events, and all programs

Manage the look + feelĀ of the Telling Room Brand including the oversight of the evolution and adherence to design standards

Manage print collateral for all external communications

Guide the organizations storytelling voice

Work closely and effectively with staff and volunteers

Development and Events

Work alongside the development director and executive director to promote and execute TR community events, the annual fundraising event, and other public engagement opportunities

Work with The TRs development director to create print and electronic fundraising collateral in alignment with overall brand and vision, including the annual appeal, the annual report, and special campaigns

Qualifications

Excellent oral and written communications skills

Ability to communicate the mission of The Telling Room and our programs with clarity to a range of audiences

Demonstrated ability to work independently, adapt to change, and meet deadlines

Experience in managing websites and knowledge of design software

Innovative and critical thinker with strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail

High level of proficiency with Adobe Suite and other graphic design programs

Passion for The Telling Rooms mission

Experience

This is not an entry-level position. This position requires at least 5 years of experience working with teams and colleagues across multiple sectors to develop and deliver internal and external communications.

Working Conditions

40-hour week in accordance with the TRs Flex-Time Policy

Some travel is required

Must have access to a car

A background check is required to ensure applicants can work around youth
