Rippleffect is a non-profit youth and community development organization in Portland, Maine. We own and operate Cow Island in Casco Bay, our campus from which most of our youth and adult programs are delivered. Cow Island has a commercial grade, solar powered kitchen that has the capacity to serve food for up to 200 guests. We are proud of our food service and are committed to maintaining our reputation for consistently providing tasty, healthy, local and aesthetically pleasing meals.

The Event Chef is primarily responsible for all aspects of preparation and execution of excellent meals for adult and weekend events on Cow Island. We require strong culinary skills and seek a hard working, independent and service-oriented individual to join our team.

Primary Responsibilities:

Preparation & Presentation:

-Prepare excellent, consistent food for weddings and adult events, numbering from 10 to 160 people

-Collaborate with Island Chef and to minimise waste and efficiently utilize shared kitchen space

-Maintain cleanliness and safety of the kitchen, eating areas and pantry

Communication:

-Has capacity to work directly with adult event clients in planning and creating menus as assigned by the Food Service Manager

-Reports to Food Service Manager in a positive, collaborative team culture

-Has capacity to work directly with young people and adults on specific and directed program activities including meal service, nutritional needs and participation in the community on Island.

Job Requirements:

-Applicant must have flexible schedule including weekends

-Minimum of 5 years experience as Executive Chef or in Event Catering.

-Knowledge of kitchen health and safety

-The capability to cook for our adult specialty events ranging from weddings to lobster bakes and corporate events

-Ability to coordinate and share kitchen with Food Service Team in the simultaneous preparation of different meals for multiple groups of people (example: standard breakfast, lunch and dinner for 35 people and simultaneous management of a weekend event for 100 people).

-Strong attention to detail.

-Ability to lift 50 lbs. We carry all of our groceries on and off our boats and up and down our ramps.

-Menu plan within given budget as approved by Food Service Manager

-Strong verbal and written communication skills; knowledge and utility with Word © and Excel © programs (or their equivalent).

-Preference will be given to candidates with prior restaurant or catering experience.

Job Logistics:

-Per Diem work is available from June to October. Specific contract dates will be set prior to employment.

-Applicant can expect to work approximately 4 days a week. Other dates may be available based on increased need.

-Applicant must be a team player, a self starter and committed to the job. The challenges of working on an island are unique and require a positive, flexible, hard working problem solver.

Compensation - $150-$200/day (based on experience and qualifications)
