The Space Telescope Science Institute is seeking a Data Analytics Developer to work with the Institutes’ DevOps, engineering and science application teams and a wide range of stakeholders to promote a culture of cost accountability and awareness for cloud consumption. Key areas the role will support include financial modeling, budgeting and forecasting, consumption analysis and KPIs, showback and analytics, and capacity management. The data analytics developer will lead the development of a modern data architecture to track and optimize cloud footprints that result in highly reliable, scalable, and cost effective services enabling the Institute to meet audit requirements, control costs, and mitigate unplanned cloud spend risk to ensure maximum value of infrastructure and supporting services.
Founded in 1981, the (STScI) serves as science operations center for NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope, science operations center and mission control for the soon-to-launch James Webb Space Telescope, and science operations center for the future Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. STScI’s offices are located in Baltimore, Maryland. STScI offers a flexible and welcoming workspace for all.

Your Role & Responsibilities
  • To build a data lake of operational and financial data on AWS cloud platform, including data ingestion through ETL, data storage and data security and analyze, report, and produce meaningful insights
  • Build machine learning models for prediction and anomaly detection to monitor cloud consumption and develop cloud financial controls and guardrails
  • Implement dynamic cost and control dashboards and alerting (cost, usage, compliance, etc.), in consultation with appropriate resources
  • Provide cost estimation and monthly billings and yearly budget forecast for AWS Cloud platforms in collaboration with accounting, finance, and technical owners
  • Collaborate with DevOps team, Engineers and stakeholders to track resource utilization in order to define and execute relevant cloud commitment plans and to define strategies to re-purpose freed up capacity
  • Advise team members and stakeholders regarding the design, development, and operation of the Billing solution as it pertains to critical business and technical objectives
  • Provide technical and architectural inputs for the understanding of the cloud and other billing systems to help shape technical requirements and solutions
  • Provide input and tracking of cloud costs to the of overall financial budgets, forecasts and actuals
  • Design, develop, and maintain reports and KPIs that provide detailed usage statistics of resources across the multi cloud landscape

Requirements include, but not limited to:
  • Knowledge and experience in Python, SQL queries and other programming languages
  • Knowledge and experience with AWS services like Athena, Quicksight and RDS
  • Working knowledge of AWS cloud billing tools, Cost Explorer, CUR, invoice process, identify uses savings plans, basic understanding of corporate accounting process
  • Analyzing & cleansing the data for a specific output
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in systems integrating with IaC(infrastructure as Code) platforms for Cloud billing
  • Experience with process optimization/automation including full software-development lifecycle, CI/CD and SAFe
  • Comfortable integrating billing solutions across multiple cloud implementations simultaneously

Preferred Skills:
  • Possess an “AWS Solutions Architect – Associate” / "AWS Certified Developer - Associate" certification – a plus
