Position Details

Monocacy National Battlefield exists to preserve the breastworks, earthworks, walls, and other defenses and shelters used by the Confederate and Union armies on July 9, 1864, as well as the buildings, roads, and outlines of the battlefield; to commemorate the Battle of Monocacy; and to provide opportunities for visitors to understand and appreciate the significance of the Battle of Monocacy within the full context of the Civil War and U.S. history.

The Monocacy National Battlefield has a fully functioning maintenance division that is responsible for maintaining a 1650 acre battlefield containing, buildings, roads, trails, monuments and historic landscapes. The park typically supports youth interns each year to help accomplish work and provide a learning environment to further encourage youth to enjoy our national parks. We are looking for a candidate to focus on trail maintenance as well as building preservation.

During the internship the Stewards member will be working on several different projects throughout the park. The first project will be aiding a journey man in cyclic maintenance repairs to an historic stone barn. This will include re-pointing of masonry, removing biological growth on the structure, as well as carpentry repairs. The other work will include the establishment of two new trail in the park including the Best Farm Trail and the Gambrill Mill Dam Ruins Trail. The trail maintenance will also include the maintenance of existing trails which will include vegetation management, trail access, and cyclic repairs to foot bridges and water bars. These projects will be accompanied by other routine trail maintenance on the park structures and historic landscapes.

The physical effort required is considered moderate to heavy and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects and/or materials over 75 lbs., while using the proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. The incumbent must frequently stand while working, climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, and crawl beneath buildings. He/she is required to step, bend, kneel, climb, and walk while performing the work in all manners of environmental conditions such as snow, mud, heat, and rain. Must have the ability to be able to use gasoline and electric power tools, including sting trimmers, push mowers, saws, drills, and sanders.

Mandatory Requirements

• Ability to meet deadlines and communicate to supervisor when assistance is needed/desired.

• Minimum age is 18, maximum age is 30.

• Possession of a current valid driver’s license

• Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States
