If so, we are looking for someone like you to join the Imaging Systems Group at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL).

We are seeking an Optical Communications Postdoctoral Researcher to help us expand a growing expertise and portfolio of work in the field of free space optical communications. Our team develops unconventional and cutting-edge optical systems for challenges in defense, remote sensing, medical, space science, and law enforcement applications. You will be part of a multi-disciplinary team of scientists and engineers who leverage their diverse backgrounds and skills in an environment of innovation.

As a member of our team, you will:

  • Primarily help design, build, and test novel free space optical communication systems.
  • Perform independent research and cultivate new programs by identifying emerging opportunities and challenges in multi-modality optical systems.
  • Support field testing activities of prototype and developed systems.
  • Document technical contributions in internal memoranda / reports and conference / journal papers, as appropriate. Present findings and recommendations at internal and external forums


Qualifications

You meet our minimum requirements for the role if you have.

  • A PhD in Optical / Applied Physics, Opitcal / Electrical Engineering, or an equvialent field
  • Analytical experience and technical breadth in optical modeling and design, optical components, and optical systems, coupled with strong organizational and planning skills
  • Research experience in one or more of the followin areas: optical communication systems, free space optics, and/or lightwave system modeling
  • Experience with MATLAB or equivalent programming languages
  • Proven ability to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team and possess strong interpersonal, verbal communication, and technical writing skills
  • Are able to obtain a Secret level security clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.
  • Can demonstrate that you are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. You'll go above and beyone our expectations if you have.

  • One or more years of experience in free space optical communication systems
  • Experience with Zemax optical design software
  • An active Secret clearance and are able to obtain a Top Secret level security clearance
