Westat is currently seeking motivated individuals with a commitment to excellence for the ongoing National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), sponsored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The core of NHANES involves in-person household interviews and medical examinations conducted in a mobile examination center (MEC). The Medical Technologist conducts all laboratory procedures, including but not limited to performing a clinical hematological assessment of blood and performing pregnancy tests. They process a variety of biologic and environmental samples such as whole blood, plasma, serum, urine, and vaginal swabs, and pack and ship processed specimens to contract laboratories.

Candidates must:

Be certified as a MT, MLT or CLS by ASCP-BOC, ASCP-BOR, or AMT;

Be licensed in state of residence, if required by state;

Have at least one year of experience in a medical laboratory;

Be at least 18 years old;

Be able to complete approximately 20 hours of home study training, prior to the in-person training;

Be available to attend a mandatory in-person training in Rockville, MD, as soon as possible after hire;

Be CPR certified or have the ability to obtain CPR certification within the first 3 months of employment;

Be willing to work at least 40 hours per week during daytime, evening, and weekend hours, when work is available;

Be willing to travel nationally for project work. Employees needing to travel for project work or training must ensure that they have proper documentation that meets the REAL ID requirements;

Be willing to commit to work for at least 1 year;

Be able to meet the physical requirements of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations which include: lifting a minimum of 35 lbs., packing, unpacking, moving, and storing equipment and supplies;

Have a valid (current and not suspended) driver’s license;

Have regular and reliable access to a computer with a high-speed internet connection; and

Have a basic computer proficiency and administrative and clerical skills.

This position requires full-time continuous travel for 48 weeks a year. Two specified vacation breaks are determined by the study schedule.

This is a full-time exempt position and is not eligible for overtime pay. Mandatory paid training will be held. Pay rates are based on experience.

While you are on active travel status in the field, your covered expenses for this position include paid lodging with an individual room, per diem based on location, and either a company car with insurance or a monthly car allowance. If electing the allowance, you must have access to a reliable, insured vehicle.

Benefits include bonuses, two paid vacations per year lasting 8-10 days each, paid holidays (Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Labor Day and Memorial Day occur during workweeks; Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and the Fourth of July occur during vacation breaks), ESOP, and 401(k); health insurance is offered at a cost.
