Job Description: The National Park Service and Historic Preservation Training Center (HPTC), along with the Stewards Individual Placement Program, are seeking individuals to participate in the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program. This program provides post-9/11 military service veterans hands-on skills training from NPS professionals, focusing on the maintenance and care of monuments, memorials, and structures in the National Park Service system. Apprentices will receive introductory training in a variety of traditional trades and will develop an understanding of historic resource stewardship while helping to preserve our nation’s historic resources. This program provides apprentices with marketable skills and excellent exposure to the historic preservation career field within the NPS as well as the private sector.

There are two components to the Traditional Trades Apprenticeship Program: an initial training period and an extended project period. For the first two to three weeks, NPS professionals teach apprentices safety techniques, preservation philosophy, and technical trades skills. During this training, apprentices complete core curriculum through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), an industry leading certification program for maintenance and craft professionals. This training will be based at the Historic Preservation Training Center in Frederick, MD. Apprentices living outside commuting distance will have housing, travel, and per diem expenses covered throughout the two to three week training period.

For the remainder of the program, apprentices hone their skills alongside NPS craftspeople at Gettysburg National Military Park.

At Gettysburg National Military Park, apprentices will focus on either monuments preservation or structures preservation. The monuments apprentice will be tasked with preserving cast bronze monuments across the battlefield. The structures apprentice will be working towards restoration of historic window sashes, wooden roofs, and timber frame repairs.

Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques. The apprentice must stand or kneel for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces such as those found beneath buildings. The apprentice will be required to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, heat and snow.


-Post-9/11 armed service veteran. Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with a discharge status of -Honorable or General under Honorable Conditions needed.

-18-35 years of age

-United States citizen or legal resident

-Priority given to individuals who are already local to a park site


-A career interest in building trade skills and/or historic preservation

-Is comfortable working outside in varying weather conditions and at heights

-Have a willingness to work hard and get dirty

-Have a serious attitude toward safety all day, every day

-Have the ability to think critically and creatively

-Have positive attitude

-Have ability to communicate effectively

-Have a professional and respectful manner and works well within a team

-Ability to commit to a six-month experience of combined training and hands-on work

-Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required

-Have the desire and ability to complete all program training requirements in order to receive NCCER and OSHA certifications including assessments and all classroom and online coursework.
