The Pre-Clinical Technician will work closely with the preclinical and clinical scientists to design and execute oncology related mouse studies using bioluminescence (BLI) imaging as well as the entire spectrum of conventional (e.g., caliper measurements, clinical scoring) endpoints to evaluate pre-clinical novel cancer therapies. Must be able to work in a team environment and contribute to other studies. May be asked to assist in some technical support duties. Must be able to understand and follow the Animal Resource Facilities standard operating procedures and DFCI institutional guidelines and policies. Individual must understand and follow the local, state, federal and regulations and guidelines.

Assist with the establishment and maintenance of mouse and rat cancer models (e.g. by injection or minor surgery).

Perform mouse and rat in vivo animal procedures, including dosing animals by various routes (e.g. oral, intravenous, intraperitoneal, etc), measuring tumors by calipers, non-invasive imaging (bioluminescent imaging)

Perform efficacy and tolerability testing in mouse and rat cancer models

Maintain treatment records and inventory of all pharmaceuticals, equipment and supplies, and help with other administrative tasks.

Responsible for maintaining and reporting accurate records, including but not limited to data associated with drug efficacy and tolerability studies, health monitoring reports, receipt of sentinel animals and animal disposition logs. Requires a working knowledge of basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, and other related software.

Routine handling, restraint, identification (including ear notching, tagging, tattooing, and toe clipping) and sexing of common laboratory animals. Ability to distinguish various common laboratory animal strains in accordance with standardized genetic nomenclature and phenotype identification.

Collaborate with and participate in the execution of other imaging modalities as appropriate and necessary.

Some in vitro experience (e.g. cell culture, proliferation assay and FACS analysis) is also preferred.

BA/BS in Animal Science or related life science is required.

LAT certification preferred

WORKING CONDITIONS: (include physical efforts when necessary)

After receiving specific training, this position will be required to occasionally work in the ABSL-2/3 suite treating and monitoring study animals.

All aspects of this position expose personnel to animal fur and dander, which may be hazardous to those with allergic conditions. Disinfectants, detergents and soaps are used in the daily sanitation assignments.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Operation of centrifuge, anesthesia machine, autoclave, heat lamp, restrainer, tumor caliper, scales, barcode scanners and ATP luminometers.
