Job Description

The Director, R & D Financewill serve as a key member of the R&D Business Planning team, contributing to overall financial management of Early Stage R&D and provide leadership over Business Planning, Early Stage Trial Forecasting, Pre-POC Program Finance Support, and Functional Finance management for the Research Organization, and the Clinical Development Organization.

This individual will provide Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) and decision support analytics to members of the Sr. R&D Leadership Team and oversee the annual budget and quarterly forecasts. This individual will also provide oversight to month end accounting close activities for Research and Clinical Development.

This individual will lead all activities related to the business planning cycle for Research and Clinical Development organizations (quarterly forecasts, AOP, LRP), and Early stage trial forecasting and LRP. This includes managing 3 or 4 direct reports (3 or 4 Clinical Financial Planners, and 1 Business Planner)

This is a high impact role requiring strong financial and management skills, decision support analysis, ability to shape and influence strategic investment decisions and ability to multi-task. This individual will be a key strategic leader within the R&D Finance team, with opportunities for visibility and influence with Senior R&D leaders, the CFO and the Executive Committee (EC)

Key Deliverables / Activities

· RDLT Members’ Leadership Teams – this role will be an integral part of the Research and Clinical Development Leadership teams providing ongoing financial support and reporting to SVP level R&D Leadership to help drive decision making. This includes aligning financial investment with overall functional and R&D strategy.

· Budgeting and Forecasting – this role will work with internal stakeholders and lead their team to create a robust annual budget and quarterly forecasting. This includes identifying drivers of variances and recommended areas for opportunities with investment. Additionally this role will partner with the leadership teams to prioritize and eliminate spend to achieve financial targets and drive financial discipline.

· Month End Accounting Closes – his role will oversee monthly accounting closes. This will include review of monthly journal entries and month end reconciliations as well as variance commentary and support of earnings materials for quarter end and year end close cycles.

· Early Stage Trials – this role will be responsible for ensuring that Biogen’s early stage trials are supported from a forecasting and governance perspective. This includes making sure the programs are staffed appropriately, and that all studies have gained approval from the appropriate governance committees prior to committing spend. Part of this responsibility is approval of purchase orders that pertain to these trials.

· Pre-POC Program Support – this role will be responsible for working with R&D organization to ensure financial representation on all clinical programs pre-proof of concept and play an integral role in Long Range Plan for Early Stage Programs.

Qualifications

· Outstanding relationship building and communication skills, including ability to navigate throughout organizations and with individuals at all levels

· Critical thinker – highly analytical and equally comfortable thinking strategically and keeping track of details

· Ability to manage direct reports, as well as lead & influence without direct authority

· High sense of urgency and ownership, with exceptional follow-through and communication skills

· 8-10 years of experience (including graduate school) in Business Planning or Accounting in biotech/pharmaceutical industry

· Experience in drug development preferred but not required

· Excellent modeling and PowerPoint skills required

Strong Hyperion skills

Additional Information

B.A./B.Sc. in related field required; MBA or CPA preferred
