Oysters Farmer (East Dennis)

Vacancy expired!

We are a small, family owned and operated oyster farm located in east Dennis, Massachusetts. We have been in business since 2004 growing and supplying oysters to local wholesalers and restaurants. We take pride in what we do and we have a little fun doing it at the same time.

We are looking for full and part-time employees to assist in the day-to-day operations of the farm. Duties include sorting and grading oysters for harvest, splitting up seed bags as they grow in size and volume, pressure washing grow-out gear, and general farm maintenance.

The most challenging aspect of this job is not the work itself, but the way it is tied directly to the ocean tides and their shifty nature. Our farm is located on the tidal flats of East Dennis in Cape Cod Bay, and we work around the low tide. We can be out on the farm roughly 2-2 1/2 hours before through 2-2 1/2 hours after the low tide. Each day the low tide mark moves forward by between 45 minutes and an hour. So if the low tide was 8 am, we could be out on the flats at 6 am and work until 10 or 10:30. The next day, the low tide would be around 9 am, and so on. This makes our schedule a little difficult to plan our lives around, but gives us flexibility at the same time. If you couldn't make a morning appointment one day, perhaps the following week you could.

There are also plenty of opportunities to work before and after the low tide. We constantly have gear to keep clean whether it's pressure washing or organizing. We also split up and sort oysters off the farm at another location, because the low tide doesn't provide us enough time.

There is no formal education required for this job, but common sense, self-awareness, and a willingness to learn is pretty much a requirement. You must also possess a valid drivers license.
