The mission of the Commonwealth Corps service internship program is to engage Massachusetts residents of all ages and backgrounds in direct service and capacity building to strengthen communities, address unmet community needs, and increase volunteerism.
Commonwealth Corps members with Girls Inc. of the Valley will serve 10.5 months in a full-time capacity. What they have in common is a desire to put their talents and ideas to use in the service of their communities and the Commonwealth.
Girls Inc. of the Valley welcomes, supports, and advocates for girls 518, with a mission of inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold by providing them with the opportunity to develop to their full potential. Our Elementary School and Middle and High School programs incorporate the six elements of the Girls Inc. experience: a girls-only environment, mentoring relationships, intentional programming, research-based curricula, interactive activities and sustained exposure. We serve 425 girls annually with comprehensive programming that helps them achieve their goals, build high self-esteem, and view themselves as community leaders. Girls Inc. provides programming at our program centers in Holyoke, and through partnerships with the public schools in Holyoke, Springfield and Chicopee.
We are seeking four full-time members to serve as Commonwealth Corps School-Based Program Facilitators in our new Elementary School Partnership Program. Each Corps member will: support girls at one of our elementary school partner sites in Holyoke, Springfield and Chicopee and at our program center; help develop the program offerings/curriculum to build the program structure; create documentation to build an elementary school partnership package; and recruit and manage community volunteers. Through their service, Corps members will enable Girls Inc. to increase the number of at risk elementary school aged girls engaged in positive youth development activities, engage additional community volunteers, and build Girls Inc.s organizational capacity.
Responsibilities:
Complete a minimum of 1,500 hours of service, serving through June 27, 2020
Attend all required Commonwealth Corps trainings and service events held by MSA (minimum of 6 total, post orientation) and Girls Inc. of the Valley, including a new member orientation on August 15 & 16, 2019.
Participate in a minimum of 1 hour of MSA-related activities each week (in person or virtually)
Provide positive youth development programming inspiring all girls to be strong, smart and bold in a partner elementary school
Collaborate with other Commonwealth Corps members and staff to create the program structure for the Elementary School Partnership Program, including tailoring nationwide curricula and developing new curricular elements
Build an elementary school partner package, including program documentation, a menu of program offerings, a Girls Inc. handbook
Support girls after school in the Girls Inc. program center and other program areas, providing positive youth development programming
In conjunction with Girls Inc.s Volunteer Coordinator, expand outreach to current and new community partners to recruit college intern, career exploration, and STEM presentation volunteers
Qualifications:
Required
Massachusetts residency and legal authorization to work in the United States
18 years of age or older
Experience with or interest in volunteerism and community engagement
Ability to balance service commitment with other family/work/school/community commitments in a sustainable way
Experience working or volunteering with youth in formal or informal educational settings (summer camp)
Ability and interest to support students with diverse backgrounds and abilities
Experience or interest in program and curriculum development and facilitation
Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job
Ability to exercise flexibility in professional situations, and ability to shift from one task to another
Creative individual with a desire to laugh and learn!
Preferred
Bachelors Degree (or working towards a degree) in education, psychology, human services, social work or relevant field
Proficiency in Spanish
Valid drivers license
Member Benefits:
Stipend of $750 every other week while in service, up to $15,750, minus taxes and withholdings;
Health insurance (individual coverage only);
Completion award of up to $2,500 (full-time) upon successful completion of service, minus taxes and withholdings;
Reimbursement for outside training or professional development opportunities relevant to members service and/or goals (Up to $50; Dependent on approval from MSA);
Additional training and other professional development opportunities; including up to $500 in professional development expenses during the term of service provided by the host site;
Limited reimbursement for travel to Corps-wide MSA-sponsored activities;
Limited travel reimbursement from their host site for certain service-related travel away from their usual service location, according to that agency's policies;
The opportunity for at least 10 days of planned absences (may include holidays); and
Opportunity to join with others with a common sense of purpose as part of the Commonwealth Corps service internship program.
Please note that receipt of these stipends/benefits may impact an individuals eligibility for certain public benefits.
Term of Service:
Position Start Date: August 15, 2019
Position End Date: June 27, 2020
Service commitment will average 38-40 hours per week during the following days/times: Monday Friday 8:00 am - 6:00 pm; this schedule will vary slightly depending on the school placement but will be consistent once set; members will not be expected to serve more than 8 hours per day on average.
Members will also be expected to serve approximately 1 evening per month for family events and approximately 6-8 weekend hours per semester for field trips, scheduled with advance notice.
