Agency/Program Mission: The mission of The Brick House is to support individual, family and community well-being through collaboration on youth development, leadership development, economic development, and education. In order to foster positive community participation, The Brick House looks to youth and parents for input and leadership. We work to improve access to local resources for parents and families, and to help strengthen local services to best meet the needs of our changing community. We also offer an after school Teen Center for youth, and serve as a community resource center for local groups to host programming in the arts, recreation, wellness, and social justice.

The Teen Center is an after school drop-in space open for youth ages 11-18 Monday-Friday from 2:30-6:00 (Summer hours Monday-Thursday 12-4). Youth participants have ongoing access to an art studio, a music recording studio with instruments, video games, movie projector, dance studio, raised bed garden, foosball and air hockey tables, food and more. The Brick House also offers structured empowerment-based youth leadership programming, with a focus on arts, creative expression, health, harm-reduction, and social justice.

Position Objective:

-To ensure that the Teen Center is well-supervised, safe, accessible, and engaging for local youth participants;

-To design, coordinate, and implement quality arts and wellness programming;

-To support youth participants by encouraging leadership, peer support, healthy communication, conflict resolution, and community-building;

-To provide responsible and thorough intervention when there are behavior issues, or when a young person is facing crisis in their personal or home life;

-To create and sustain strong partnerships with local stakeholders, including families, neighbors, service providers, coalition members, and Brick House supporters.

Duties and Responsibilities:

-Staff daily drop-in hours, providing support for youth ages 11-18

-Develop and implement appropriate programming for teens, with support from community members, youth leaders, and staff

-Coordinate and oversee youth events such as open mics, art shows, movie screenings, concerts, parties, field trips, and other recreational activities

-Encourage youth to give input for Teen Center programming, changes, and improvements

-Design and convene a weekly youth leadership workshop. Provide space for youth to engage with issues of social justice, anti-oppression, healthy living skills, harm reduction, nonviolent communication, mediation, physical recreation, conflict resolution, job readiness, etc.

-Plan and facilitate art activities for youth participants. Focus may include music, poetry, fine arts, theater, movement, etc.

-Conduct outreach, interviews, training, and supervision for consultants and volunteers who assist in Teen Center or offer structured arts and leadership programming

-Supervise AmeriCorps Members as they serve in the Teen Center. Includes monthly member evaluations, weekly staff meetings, training, and ongoing guidance

-Provide conflict resolution support and accountability within a Restorative Practices framework for youth participants. May include mediation, limit-setting, parent intervention, connecting youth with resources, coordination with schools, etc.

-Provide referrals to other local youth and family services, as needed

-Conduct outreach in schools and community, connecting with youth and service providers

-Administer surveys and collect data on program participation to identify emerging needs, plan for, and evaluate programming

-Contribute program and demographic data to monthly, quarterly, and annual grant reports

-Assist in writing new grants to support youth program initiatives

-Update website, social media, and calendar as needed

-Attend off-site coalition meetings with partner agencies, participate in coalition working groups and youth leadership special events

-Maintain and develop our collaboration with local organizations, including social services, youth services, schools, domestic violence prevention programs, and health organizations

Required Qualifications:

-Significant experience working with youth ages 11-18 in a group setting

-Knowledge of child and adolescent development, and familiarity with the impact of childhood traumatic experiences on youth development, behavior, and risk

-Strong interpersonal communication skills, patience, and the ability to work in a challenging, high-energy environment

-Experience and confidence intervening with youth during times of tension, conflict, or disrespectful behavior

-Familiarity with Restorative Practices and experience utilizing non-violent communication skills, mediation, active listening, and restorative limit-setting to address issues

-Excellent planning and organizational skills

-Experience networking and collaborating with local service providers on community needs assessment and joint programming

-Strong facilitation and/or training background

-Demonstrated ability to cooperate with and interact respectfully with staff members and community members.

-Commitment to working individually and within an organization to achieve social and racial justice, conversant with issues of social and systemic oppression

-Excellent written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills

-Personal talents, hobbies, or areas of knowledge which can be shared with youth such as: music, dance, visual arts, martial arts, outdoor skills, gardening, etc.

-Technology and computer literacy

-Reliable transportation, insured and registered vehicle with up-to-date inspection, plus willingness and capacity to transport youth occasionally to programs and services

-Must be able to pass a CORI (background) check

Schedule and Compensation:

26 hours per week. Must be available Mon-Fri 2:30-6:00, remaining hours flexible. Occasional evening or weekend hours for special events. Anticipated start date: mid to late August.

$20/hr with benefits: HRA healthcare reimbursement, sick and vacation accrual, paid holidays
