Art History/Visual Culture– Full-Time Faculty

The College for Creative Studies (CCS) invites applications for a full-time faculty position in the Department of Liberal Arts with special expertise in any or all of the following: art history/ visual culture, visual anthropology and/ or aesthetic philosophy. This position reports to the Chair of the Liberal Arts Department within the Undergraduate Studies Division. The full-time faculty member in art history/visual culture is responsible for developing and teaching courses as assigned at the undergraduate level and is responsible for maintaining a superior pedagogy in the field. The faculty member works with the Department Chair to provide ongoing evaluation and enhancement of program curriculum as it relates to the field of art history/visual culture, as well as contributes to development of new curriculum and program opportunities. The faculty member maintains an active role in the CCS Liberal Arts Department governance, and supports the CCS learning community at large. The faculty member teaches three courses per semester. Rank and compensation are commensurate with experience. Start date: winter 2021.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Liberal Arts Department at CCS offers students a body of knowledge and a variety of skills that address the professional demands of the twenty-first century. The comprehensive breadth of Liberal Arts Department courses at CCS provides students many opportunities to explore and synthesize a complex array of interdisciplinary crosscurrents to benefit creative endeavors. The Liberal Arts Department also inspires life-long curiosity and eagerness to learn through its many course offerings and experiences. This curiosity, in turn, will allow students to assume responsibility as ethical, active participants within the larger global community.

POSITION DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Perform the duties of a full-time faculty member as described in the Faculty Handbook:

  • Teach three classes per semester during the academic year
  • Develop curriculum, including online classes, as appropriate
  • Advise students and adjunct faculty, serve on faculty committees as assigned
  • Participate in faculty governance and other activities of the Liberal Arts Department and the College, as requested.

• Perform duties associated with re-accreditation support.
• Perform duties associated with various Liberal Arts Department assessment initiatives.
• Maintain active scholarship and publishing, with an intent to pursue further research.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Candidates must hold a doctorate degree in art history, visual culture, or a closely related discipline with an emphasis on the visual and/or aesthetics, and have at least three years of post-doctorate, post graduate assistantship teaching experience in any/all of the following subjects at the college-level: art history/ visual culture, visual anthropology, or aesthetic philosophy at an accredited school or department of art, art history, design or related field. Special preference will be given to teaching experience at colleges of art and design.

Additional qualifications include:

• Documentation of effective course development (including online development) from initial concept, to syllabus, to student or administrative course evaluations/ class observation.
• Documented recent scholarly activity, awards, grants
• Documented participation/ leadership in professional development activities: seminars, training, etc.
• Proven track record of effectiveness teaching students from diverse backgrounds
• Proven track record of effectiveness in teaching students with learning challenges
• Ability to design and teach online classes, including hybrid classes
• Documented technical proficiency in managing electronic media: LUNA visual imagery or equivalent, Blackboard or equivalent
• Active scholarly practice with an intent to pursue further research
