Artistic/Music Director for Out Loud Chorus

Out Loud Chorus, Washtenaw County's original mixed LGBT chorus, is hiring an Artistic/Music Director. This is a part-time, paid position. The chorus is a non-auditioned, community chorus comprised of singers of varying degrees of ability and experience. We produce two concerts per yearone in January and one in May and sing at other events at invitation. We rehearse on Monday evenings in Ann Arbor.
The choir has an active and supportive board that works in conjunction with the director to ensure the success of the performances. The director must attend monthly board meeting. The director must coordinate the creation of (voiced) rehearsal recordings to support singers who do not read music. The power structure is different from that of most performing arts organizations, where the artistic director makes all decisions. In Out Loud, the director reports to the board and the board reports to the chorus as a whole. Decisions about music repertoire and concert production are made in conjunction with committees comprised of choristers and the director. More information is available on our website: olconline.org.
Key Skills and Education for a Successful Candidate
Music Education Degree in choral conducting with emphasis on vocal technique or commensurate experience. Basic piano skills.
Working with singers of significantly varying skill levels
Direct instrumentalist and have the capacity to arrange parts for instrumentalist
Flexible and open to new approaches to performing traditional music
Exposure and understanding to the LGBT community and the need to value all people regardless of differences
Clear communicator
Interest in working with the Board in making organizational decisions
Provide artistic vision and input into grant proposals

Out Loud's Mission
Out Loud is a mixed chorus for the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender community, yet open to all. Out Loud provides continuing musical education and performance experience as well as a social outlet for persons interested in choral music and its production. Out Loud is fun and flexible, open to many levels of ability, and committed to embodying the diversity of our community. In addition, the chorus seeks to educate the general public about choral music and, through performances, to reduce bigotry and discrimination against our community.
In keeping with our mission, the Out Loud Chorus seeks to perform a wide variety of choral music. We recognize that music from other eras may not reflect society's current acceptance of diversity. Because of this, some audience members may occasionally disagree with ideas described by lyrics we perform. The Out Loud Chorus as a whole neither advocates nor denigrates any particular belief or tradition. Rather, by the diversity of our music, we seek to celebrate and be sensitive to the broad diversity of our culture and our community. We invite our audiences to help us create a community where all participants feel welcome.
OutLoud Chorus is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization.
Compensation is 7000/10 month contract plus additional compensation for practices and performances outside the 10 month contract
