Job Summary: The Phlebotomist is responsible for specimen collection from patients of all ages and preparing the specimen for transport to the appropriate laboratory departments. Other responsibilities include: Answering phones, Problem solving, Customer Service, Report distribution, Receive patients, visitors, and specimens at reception desk, Prepare reference specimens for transport to reference laboratory. Other clerical duties as assigned.Minimum Requirements: High school graduate or equivalent. Formal phlebotomy and clerical training preferred or at least one year of experience in such a position. Skills, Talents and Abilities: Work is performed in accordance with detailed and specific instructions or procedures. Very little or no operating freedom is used. Decisions and influence are limited to the activities of a work group, unit or small department. Minimal analytical ability is required. Position Accountabilities:Verify patient identity, explain procedure, collect blood specimens from all patients.

Enter orders and patient demographic into electronic data system as required.

Deliver all collected specimens to appropriate areas of the laboratory, in-patients, and physician office. Preparation should include name on the specimen, all demographic and insurance information and Advanced Beneficiary Notices when needed and follow up on missing information.

Proper handling of urine drug screen and chain of custody forms.

Maintain files as necessary.

Monitor specimen collection material inventories. Discard outdated supplies.

Maintain specimen collection area and trays in well stocked, clean fashion.

Distribute reports as necessary.

Clean glassware as needed.

Answer phone calls, forward calls to appropriate individuals.

Phone reports to physician offices as requested.

Exhibit professional and courteous presence toward patients, co-workers and visitors.

Participates in laboratory Unit Based Council or other hospital related quality improvement initiatives.

Other duties as requested or assigned.
