The role of the Operations Engineer demands deep and broad technical skills in multiple domains such as server hardware and operating systems, storage, scripting/automation, and network infrastructure. Primary responsibilities are in the server and storage space, to include hardware OS’s, hypervisors and data backup and recovery solutions. This role also requires strong interpersonal skills and the ability to lead technical decision making as well as maintain complex technical documentation. The role also entails the ability to serve as a Product Owner in an Agile framework.

Responsibilities:

  • Support major incident resolution and on call in the server and storage domain.
  • Lead offshore technical SMEs to develop and document comprehensive technical designs, meeting operational, project, vendor, and business requirements.
  • Serve as a technical escalation point for offshore operational teams to resolve incidents and problems.
  • Serves as accountable infrastructure technical design lead throughout transfer to operations project phases.
  • Document and report on licensing, maintenance and subscription requirements for infrastructure in the server and storage domains.
  • Oversee, improve and report on Commvault backup solution as executed by offshore resources.
  • Works with engineering teams and architects to create new standard architectures as emerging technologies or requests arise.
  • Review and evaluate proposed solutions to ensure selected solutions meet or can be designed to fit within current infrastructure standards.
  • Work with operations colleagues and engineering teams to re-architect solutions when gaps are identified.
  • Provide liaison services to business partners when it comes to delivering infrastructure in the server and storage domains.
  • Research and provide options for new infrastructure platforms when needed.
  • Remain current on Public Cloud infrastructure technology trends as they evolve.
  • Work with SMEs to develop architectural documentation on systems which were not previously documented.
  • Create clearly defined Product Backlog items for Agile teams in improving operations.
  • Ordering the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions.
  • Be familiar with and track metrics related to infrastructure consumption (both on-prem and in the cloud).
Required Qualifications and Certification:
Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related field or equivalent experience
One or more of the following certifications required:
  • Microsoft Certified Professional: MCSA(MCSE) in either Windows 2012 or later versions
  • SUSE Certified Engineer (SCE)
  • RED Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)
Desired areas of certification:
  • VMWare
  • Commvault
  • Dell/EMC
  • Nutanix
  • 7+ years of combined IT experience with a deep exposure to multiple Infrastructure domains such as servers, storage, virtualization, and automation, with a broad exposure to other infrastructure domains in large enterprise environments.
  • Experience creating infrastructure designs and documentation for large and complex IT solutions is a plus.
  • Experience formally or informally leading technical teams or projects.

Nature of WorkDuties can include network management, software development and database administration. Essential Functions
Works closely with department managers and users to define and analyze business and operational problems, process improvement opportunities and requirements; analyzes operational and business mandates and legal requirements; identifies and analyzes complex, ambiguous and/or conflicting business process issues; advises department managers on applications development, enhancement and maintenance issues; explains technology and process options and assists managers in analysis and decision making; analyzes management information needs and recommends data and reporting processes; coordinates the development of department priorities and works within IT to align initiatives to these priorities; facilitates user meetings and joint development sessions. Develops and refines business models and relationship diagrams; evaluates methods of improving efficiency and cost effectiveness of business, technical and operational processes; works with users to reengineer work processes; analyzes functional business requirements and translates user expectations into detailed business requirements, specifications and success criteria; works with Information Systems to develop conceptual proposals for business process automation initiatives; recommends work process and/or operational changes to complement system functionalities; serves as an advocate for department needs with IT; stays abreast of developments in departmental processes to anticipate emerging technology needs. Participates in the development of statements of work for RFPs/RFIs; participates in evaluating vendor applications and solutions; coordinates department review of vendor deliverables for accuracy and completeness, ensuring that department needs and requirements have been met. Develops significant application/hardware solutions to problems and addresses change request issues that require assignment of resources. Analyzes and troubleshoots complex and sometimes urgent applications problems and errors; takes action or communicates solutions to problems; answers technical questions and provides guidance to users on system functionalities and methods for correcting problems. Develops training materials and handouts; conducts user applications training classes and one-on-one training sessions; develops and maintains user and system documentation. Designs and generates custom reports to meet user needs; uses reporting tools to extract user-required data. Plans and coordinates the deployment of new technologies for client solutions; coordinates user acceptance testing and the resolution of problems identified. Regular attendance is expected.
