ITHAKA is seeking a Senior Visual Product Designer to design UI and user experience for JSTOR, our software platform that provides access to more than 12 million academic journal articles, books, images, and primary sources to users at over 11,000 colleges, universities, libraries, museums and NGOs in 170 countries.

The Role

As Graphic Designer, youll have an influential role within the Graphic Design team and across the entire organization championing the end user experience and helping create powerful, beautiful and simple-to-use products. Youll address opportunities like:

Finding visual and interactive UI solutions that clarify and explain product offerings, and solve workflow challenges for librarians and scholarly researchers and collection curators.

Working closely with full-stack engineering teams to build interactive and data-driven marketing portals for librarians, JSTOR collection buyers and account managers.

Looking holistically at product workflows across individual product lines and users to align with our platform strategy, design system and vision for entirely new library services.

Reporting to the VP of Product Design and User Experience, you will work with fellow product designers, researchers, and writers while collaborating with a cross-functional agile development team. Youll have responsibility for the overall functionality and feature directions to ensure a great user experience.

Your days might include the following:

Storyboarding a users goals, creating end-to-end framing of user tasks in a narrative format.

Prototyping user interface flows with brand hallmarks, imagery and UI components that reinforce the JSTOR brand visually and experientially, leverageable across marketing and other public websites.

Prioritizing and prototyping cross-channel marketing experiences with features and functions learned in partnership with user researchers and collaboration with product managers.

Sharing constructive feedback in design reviews to unify our brand with an emergent design system, and bringing out the best in your colleagues design work.

What do we need you to bring?

Youre an effective communicator, able to explain the problems your design solves, and how user experience includes brand perception and product marketing. Youre an expert at balancing user needs and business requirements, translating them into sketches and prototypes, and collaborating with the Product and User Research teams to iterate your designs. Youre excited to work alongside expert front-end engineers, shipping final product for millions of users that is pixel perfect and embodies the brand.

Specific Objectives and Responsibilities

Design the visual interface and branded and interactive components, present the product with positioning, great copy and an eye towards clarity and product simplification. Youll follow design patterns and create new ones when needed.

User understanding, empathy and advocacy. Ability to work with a team to crystallize user goals, problem setting, design thinking / framing, end-to-end storytelling and early concept generation.

Conceive product concepts, break down a user experience into concrete interaction design steps to simplify, reduce and simplify the optimal user flow.

Participate in user research goal setting, analysis and occasional facilitation when necessary. Utilize research and evaluation techniques to further an understanding of user behaviors, needs, and motivations.

Deliver final design assets that communicate the essence of the product, including user storyboards, sketches and wireframes, low and high fidelity prototypes, and UI specifications for development during agile sprints.

Be a strong champion of best design practices and usability patterns across platforms and form factors, i.e., desktop, responsive and mobile web.

Skills & Experience

1-2 years of experience in Graphic Design or related digital design position.

Demonstrated success owning final interface design of engaging, useful, coherent products that delight end users.

Experience in designing for consumer, large scale complex systems and tools.

Strong project and time management skills with a demonstrated ability to work independently.

Superb creative, communication and interpersonal teamwork skills, able . Ability to motivate and co-create with teams distributed over multiple locations.

Degree or relevant background / certification in UX design, graphic design, product design, interaction design or related field.
